Titans Week 1 Recap and Week 2 Preview

This was not the start of the season Titans fans wanted, as Week 1 the Titans had a mix of injuries, a couple rain delays that resulted in the longest game in NFL history, and ending up losing.

Tennessee started off the game strong with stopping Miami then driving down the field and scoring a field goal to take an early lead. However, with a 3-0 lead in the first, the next drive down Tennessee went for it on 4th and goal and didn’t get into the end zone on a screen pass to Corey Davis. Throughout the rest of the half after a rain delay, it seemed as if the teams weren’t in the zone as they had to get taken off the field for a long period of time. However, Miami was able to drive down the field and score on a touchdown pass to Kenny Stills early in the 2nd quarter. While the first couple drives were what everyone hoped with bringing in a new coaching staff, the rest of the half they struggled to move the ball.Image result for dion lewis titans 2018

After a couple of punts to start the second half, Miami drove down the field well against Tennessee’s defense, however Malcolm Butler ended the drive with having an interception in the end zone. While Butler saved the drive, it was wasted as the next play Mariota threw a interception on a screen pass that ended in the hands of Kiko Alonso. On that play, Mariota ended up going out for the rest of the game with an injury. Miami ended the drive with a field goal taking a 10-3 lead on the Titans. With Blaine Gabbert coming under center, the Titans moved the ball down the field with Dion Lewis leading the way and ending the drive with a touchdown tying the game up.

While Tennessee looked to be in the game starting the 4th Quarter, Miami jumped forward with a lead quickly having a kick return touchdown followed by scoring a deep touchdown giving Miami a 24-10 lead with just over ten minutes left in the game. However, Tennessee came back into it with Jennings having a kick return touchdown. The next drive, Kenny Vaccaro picked off Ryan Tannehill. However, Tennessee failed to capitalize once again with Blaine Gabbert throwing an interception to end the drive. Miami followed this by scoring a field goal giving Miami a 27-17 lead with just a few minutes left in the 4th. Tennessee ended the game scoring a field goal making it a 27-20 game but ended up losing.

While Tennessee did have moments where they looked good, they struggled to capitalize on interceptions and was unable to move the ball as well once Mariota went down with an injury. Mariota however, wasn’t the only key injuries to Tennessee’s offense, with both Delanie Walker and Taylor Lewan going down as well. Walker broke his ankle and is out for the rest of the season, however Lewan will at least miss Week 2 against the Texans.

Off season acquisitions Malcolm Butler and Dion Lewis both played a good part of the game with Lewis taking over the lead back role after Henry struggled to move the ball. Butler had a good drive saving interception, however, he was later burned by Kenny Stills for a touchdown. Dion Lewis shined in the backfield and Derrick Henry struggled for the most part, however, Henry did have a 62 yard touchdown run that was called back by a holding penalty, which would have made him look much better.

Week 2 Preview:

Without Lewan and Conklin week 2, Tennessee will struggle to stop the Texans stellar pass rush led by JJ Watt. Report out is that Mariota will be active, but both him and Gabbert are expected to play. This is a twist that isn’t seen often where a coach says both quarterbacks are expected to play, meaning until the game is going it’s unsure what to expect out of the situation, however expect Mariota to start. This will be a tough match-up for Vrabel and the coaching staff as Houston is a talented team on both sides of the ball, putting the team up to a test early in the season, Tennessee will have to rely on running back duo Dion Lewis and Derrick Henry to keep themselves in this game, hoping Henry can produce better than last week.
