Former Divas Champion Returns to WWE; Enters 2nd Mae Young Classic

Earlier today, a big breaking story broke in the world of women’s wrestling, as it was announced that Celeste Bonin, aka Kaitlyn, was officially announced as the first confirmed participant in the 2nd Mae Young Classic tournament! For Kaitlyn, this will mark a return to WWE for the first time since early 2014. Kaitlyn’s WWE career began as one of six contestants in the all female season of NXT, which was a competition show back then. She was actually a replacement for Aloisia, the 6’9″ wrestler best known under the name Isis the Amazon, but despite this, Kaitlyn won the competition, outlasting Maxine, Naomi, AJ, Aksana, and Jamie Keyes.

After officially debuting on the main roster in early 2011, Kaitlyn began her first official angle as one half of The Chickbusters with real life best friend AJ Lee. It was later that summer that the duo began feuding with the nearly formed villainous pair known as the Divas of Doom, which consisted of real-life best friends Beth Phoenix and Natalya. The feud began with Natalya’s heel turn on August 5, as she attacked AJ after defeating her, doing so in solidarity to Beth’s attack towards Kelly Kelly four days prior. The feud was a one-sided affair, as the Divas of Doom always defeated the Chickbusters, and it led to an angle in late November where Kaitlyn began turning heel by lashing out at AJ over their losses. It was on December 9 that Kaitlyn completed her heel turn and betrayed AJ in favor of joining the Divas of Doom. The segment was taped three nights prior, and it saw the Chickbusters again losing to DOD, followed by Kaitlyn leaving with her new villainous allies. However, the segment was cut from the SmackDown broadcast on the airdate, putting an abrupt end to the angle.

Kaitlyn spent 2012 appearing on NXT, and it was later that year that she competed on a WWE PPV for the first time, as she, Layla, and Tamina defeated Beth, Natalya, and Eve Torres. This was the beginning of Kaitlyn’s slow elevation, which included winning a #1 Contender’s battle royal to face Layla at Night of Champions. At the PPV, Kaitlyn was attacked backstage, allowing Eve to replace Kaitlyn and win the title from Layla. In the weeks that followed, Aksana was revealed as Kaitlyn’s attacker, and it led to Kaitlyn and Layla both challenging Eve at Hell in A Cell, which saw both challengers defeated. Kaitlyn failed on many attempts to dethrone Eve, but on January 14, 2013, Kaitlyn finally defeated Eve to capture the Divas Championship, doing so on the 20th Anniversary edition of Raw in Kaitlyn’s hometown of Houston.

Kaitlyn’s brief heel turn in November 2013

The first months of Kaitlyn’s title reign were interesting, as Layla was on the verge of turning heel and manipulating her way into a title opportunity against her longtime ally. After the angle was kiboshed, Kaitlyn ended up feuding with the now-villainous AJ Lee, which resulted in AJ defeating Kaitlyn at Payback on June 16, 2013 to capture the Divas Championship (beginning AJ’s 295-day reign). Kaitlyn had Layla back in her corner during her quest to regain the title, which saw her come up short at Money In the Bank in July. She earned another chance in August on SmackDown, but during the match, Layla turned heel by betraying Kaitlyn in favor of AJ, intentionally costing Kaitlyn the title. The feud was finally settled at SummerSlam, which saw Kaitlyn and Dolph Ziggler defeat AJ and Big E Langston. Interestingly, Kaitlyn briefly turned heel entering Survivor Series, as she became part of AJ Lee’s team against the cast of Total Divas. The teams faced off in an elimination match at Survivor Series, as well as a rematch on Raw the following evening, with the Total Divas cast winning both times. Kaitlyn’s last WWE match (at the time) took place on the January 8, 2014 edition of Main Event: a loss to AJ Lee.

Kaitlyn’s return to WWE has been rumored following her return to wrestling earlier this year. It was on February 10, 2018 that Kaitlyn (under her real name, Celeste Bonin) competed in her first wrestling match in 49 months, defeating indy sensation Rachael Ellering at a Coastal Championship Wrestling event in Florida. It was after her departure from WWE that Kaitlyn began her fitness clothing business, Celestial Bodiez, and also got married to bodybuilder PJ Braun–a marriage that ended last year. Fans (myself included) had been hoping for Kaitlyn to return to WWE after her indy appearance, so this news is music to those fans’ ears. As for this fan, I am happy that Kaitlyn’s back for the Mae Young Classic, and I hope it leads to a full time return to WWE. I also hope that Kaitlyn finally acts as a heel in her return; a heel turn had been teased for Kaitlyn numerous times, but she never got the chance to act as a villainess, something I believe she would flourish in.

As announced earlier, the 2nd Mae Young Classic will be taped in early August, though it has still yet to be announced when the tournament will air on the WWE Network.
