Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which recaps everything in women’s wrestling in the past week, beginning with Monday’s Raw.

On Raw, Nia Jax faced off against Natalya for the first time ever, and the match ended with an apparent injury to Natalya’s ankle, with Ronda Rousey rushing to her aid and Nia showing concern. Ronda engaged harshly with Nia in the ring, and in the backstage area while Nia continued to show concern; more on this later. Speaking of later, Alexa Bliss, Sasha Banks, and Ember Moon faced the Riott Squad, but Alexa conveniently became injured and left. In the tail end of the match, Bayley entered as an apparent replacement and picked up the win for her side, but after the match, Kurt Angle (under the pressure of Stephanie McMahon’s “constable” Baron Corbin) informed the babyfaces that Bayley’s involvement disqualified them, and that the Riott Squad were named as the winners.

SmackDown kicked off with Carmella’s attempt to expose Asuka, using her WrestleMania loss as her version of proof that Asuka isn’t the force she used to be. This led to Asuka confronting Carmella, only to be interrupted by Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose. After Paige came out, Asuka demanded to face BOTH Sonya and Mandy, and the Empress of Tomorrow was victorious. Later on, Naomi and Jimmy Uso defeated Aiden English and Lana, and Becky Lynch defeated Charlotte in a battle between Horsewomen and MITB participants.

NXT kicked off with Shayna Baszler vs Nikki Cross being official for NXT Takeover: Chicago, and also saw the rubber match in the rivalry between Kairi Sane and Lacey Evans, with the MYC winner emerging victorious. On Thursday, Tessa Blanchard’s interview was interrupted by Kiera Hogan reminding her of her loss to Madison Rayne at Under Pressure. An already angered Tessa unleashed a furious assault towards Kiera, showing that her loss to Madison was a very sore subject. Su Yung celebrated her Knockouts Championship victory, but at SHINE 51, Su wasn’t so fortuitous, as she came up short against LuFisto for the SHINE Championship.

OK, so let me see if I have this right. Nia Jax turns heel one week, and then the next week, she’s suddenly a babyface again? It appeared to be the case when she showed concern for Natalya after being injured during their match, and continued doing so backstage. You know, the heel turn was a bad idea, but what was worse was the absence of consistency. I expected Nia’s concern to be a front so she could either lay out Nattie, attack Ronda, or both. None of these things happened. It was bad enough that this match was rushed, now the build for this is severely lacking.

Happy birthday to WWE’s most talked about signee, Deonna Purrazzo, who turned 24 on Sunday! And speaking of Ronda, it was announced over the weekend that she’ll be the first woman inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, so congratulations to Ronda Rousey!

A new week begins with the final countdown to MITB weekend on Raw, SmackDown, and NXT. Also, Lucha Underground returns this Wednesday! Until next week!
