Royally Yours: Week in Review

The Royals continued to struggle this week only winning two of their seven games. They started the week in Toronto against the Blue Jays. Their game on Monday was postponed until Tuesday afternoon because of a hole in the roof of the Rogers Centre. The Royals were swept by the Blue Jays in the three game series. Their weekend series was in Detroit against the Tigers. They played four games because of the April 4th postponement. The Royals won the evening game on Friday and the game on Sunday. However, the two losses on Friday and Saturday led to a series loss for the weekend and the postponed series.

Kansas City is still in last place in the American League Central. The Indians lead the division with a record of 11-8. The Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers make up the middle of the division. The Royals and Chicago White Sox are in last place, 6.5 games behind the division leading Indians. The Royals have the third fewest wins in the MLB.

Abraham Almonte hit a grand slam on Sunday against the Tigers. It was the Royals first grand slam of the season. The Royals signed Almonte to a one-year contract with two more arbitration eligible years this off-season. Last season Almonte played with the Indians where he hit .233 with three home runs in 69 games. The Royals called him up after Alex Gordon was placed on the disabled list. This season Almonte is hitting .233 with one home run through 10 games. Almonte is not a long-term solution for the Royals but he has filled in well since Gordon has been injured.

Mike Moustakas continues to have a lot of power this season. He has six home runs, which is tied for fourth in the American League. He also leads qualified American League third basemen in batting average at .313. Moustakas had a power-hitting breakout last season and it appears it has continued into this season.

The Royals will return home this week to play two series in Kansas City. They will start the week in a two game series against the Milwaukee Brewers. They will face former Royal Lorenzo Cain in the series. Cain signed a five-year contract with the Brewers this off-season after spending the last seven seasons with the Royals. This season Cain has a .301 average, two home runs and four stolen bases. The Royals weekend series will be against the Chicago White Sox. They will play five games over the weekend because of a postponed game from April 1st. The Royals are 0-2 against the White Sox this season. The Royals still have not won a series this season but they will have an opportunity against the White Sox who are also struggling.
