The Burgundy Breakdown

Welcome to the Burgundy Breakdown, which recaps the latest week in action featuring the Colorado Avalanche!

The week began with the Avalanche in Minnesota, facing the Wild for the final time this regular season. The Avs’ dominance against the Wild continued, as they blasted Minnesota, 5-1, resulting in a 3-0-1 record against their longtime division rivals. Two nights later, the Avs went to St. Louis to face the Blues, picking up another road win, 4-1, behind two goals from Nathan MacKinnon. On the following evening, the Avalanche returned home against the Predators, but their latest battle against the Western Conference Champions was not a successful one, losing 4-2 to end their nine-game points streak. The Avs made up for that loss with a home win against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday, winning 5-1 behind…yes, you guessed it…two goals from Nathan MacKinnon.

The Avalanche are continuing to rack up wins and pick up points; going 7-1-3 in their last 11 games. With three weeks left in the season, Colorado stands at 39-25-8 and 86 points, holding on to the #1 Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, standing three points behind Minnesota for third place in the Central, and two points ahead of Los Angeles and Dallas. To say that the Avs have exceeded last season’s performance and overall expectations would be an understatement. And I’m just going to come out and say it: the Hart Trophy should just have Nathan MacKinnon’s name on it. He is clearly the MVP; as he has continued to show how valuable he is to the Avalanche this season.

The Avalanche’s magic number to reach the playoffs is 17 points, and they have 10 games left. A new week begins with the Avs heading to the Windy City on Tuesday to face the Blackhawks, followed by back-to-back home games against the Kings (on Thursday) and Golden Knights (on Saturday).

That’s the Burgundy Breakdown for this week! Until next week!
