The Burgundy Breakdown

Welcome to the Burgundy Breakdown, which recaps the latest week in action featuring the Colorado Avalanche!

Coming off an OT loss to the Predators, the Avalanche went on the road to face the slumping Chicago Blackhawks this past Tuesday. Regulation ended tied at 1, but Jonathan Toews scored just nine seconds into OT, handing the Avalanche a 2-1 loss. The Avs went to Columbus on Thursday, and started off well with two goals in an 11-second span in the first period. Colorado entered the third period down 4-2, but goals by Gabriel Landeskog and Carl Soderberg led to the Avs reaching OT for the third straight game. Yet again, the Avalanche fell, thanks to a goal by Seth Jones, resulting in a 5-4 loss. Colorado returned home on Saturday, defeating the Arizona Coyotes, 5-2, behind a three-goal first period.

It was a nickel-and-dime effort, as the Avalanche’s current seven game points streak has included three consecutive OT losses. However, the Avs are the holders of the 2nd Wild Card position with their 4-0-3 record in the last seven games. Their 80 point total ties them with the Anaheim Ducks, with Colorado having two games in hand, and they are just two points behind the next team ahead of them: the Dallas Stars. The Central Division’s Top 3 isn’t out of the picture for the Avs, as they stand five points behind Minnesota. The Wild are Colorado’s next opponents, as the Avs will head to Minnesota on Tuesday. After that, the Avalanche head to Nashville on Thursday, and will return home to host the Blues on Friday and the Red Wings on Sunday.

That’s the Burgundy Breakdown for this week! Until next week!
