Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which recaps everything in women’s wrestling in the past week, beginning with Monday’s Raw.

On Raw, Sasha Banks and Bayley defeated Paige’s Absolution henchwomen, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville, and throughout the show, Alexa Bliss attempted to stir the pot following her loss to Asuka. She made claims that Asuka was insulting Nia, though Nia wasn’t buying the ruse. However, Nia did take it upon herself to beat down Asuka, because as she said to Bliss, their paths will cross anyway. On SmackDown, Becky Lynch got her revenge on the Riott Squad by defeating the group’s namesake leader, Ruby Riott.

NXT kicked off with Shayna Baszler defeating Dakota Kai, but it was due to the Mae Young Classic runner up intentionally injuring Dakota’s arm. She was about to continue her sadistic assault before she was run out of the ring by Ember Moon. On the following evening’s Impact Wrestling, Laurel Van Ness defeated KC Spinelli in non-title action, only for Allie to appear and take down the Knockouts Champion, doing so as payback for Laurel’s attack a week prior.

News broke over the weekend that Paige’s in-ring career in WWE is over. Paige suffered a stinger after a live event match in New York, and it has become so severe that she can no longer compete in the ring. This is devastating news for the 25-year-old–even though she’s competed for a decade, she’s still young. Paige, the first-ever NXT Women’s Champion and a former two-time WWE Divas Champion, came back in November 2017 after a year-long hiatus due to injury. She returned as the villainous leader of the Absolution faction, which she formed with Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville, a pair of call-ups from NXT. Paige and her on-screen henchwomen declared themselves for the Women’s Royal Rumble on January 1, and it was speculated that either she or Asuka would most likely win it. The news definitely changes things, and one has to wonder how Mandy and Sonya will be used from this point on.

Hard to believe it was five years ago that Kaitlyn won the Divas Championship. Kaitlyn spent the latter half of 2012 chasing the title, at the time held by Layla before Eve Torres won it at Night of Champions. After many attempts, Kaitlyn captured the title on January 14, 2013 in her home town of Houston, and she held the title for five months. Kaitlyn (real name Celeste Bonin) left WWE in January 2014, and had been retired from wrestling until news broke that she would return and compete at a independent event next month. Could we see Kaitlyn as a surprise entrant in the Rumble before that? We’ll see on the 28th.

Speaking of the Women’s Royal Rumble, it was reported that WWE reached out to former Women’s Champions Michelle McCool and Molly Holly to appear in the Rumble. While the jury’s out on Michelle, it was confirmed that Molly Holly will appear at the Rumble in two weeks. Awesome Kong, who was in WWE briefly as Kharma in 2011, has publicly stated that she wants to participate in the Women’s Rumble. She was the third and most recent woman to compete in the Men’s Rumble, doing so in 2012.

Though, the Rumble is in two weeks, a big week takes begins tomorrow. The countdown for the Rumble continues on Raw, SmackDown, and NXT, and the WOH Championship Tournament will start this upcoming Saturday, the same day as Queens of Combat’s doubleheader! Until next week!
