Tomahawks and Touchdowns: Week #13 Recap

The Chiefs had another poor performance last week. They lost to the New York Jets on the road 38-31. It was their sixth loss in seven weeks. The losing streak has had a big impact on the Chiefs position in the standings and play-off chances.

The loss last weekend cost the Chiefs the top spot in the AFC West. They are now in a three-way tie for first in the AFC West. The Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders all have a 6-6 record. Three of the Chiefs last four games are against division opponents. The Chiefs are still in the playoff hunt despite their recent slump.

Last week the Chiefs announced that Alex Smith would finish the season as the Chiefs starter. There were suggestions that rookie Patrick Mahomes would be a better option but the Chiefs decided to stick with Smith as the starter. Smith has been consistent throughout the season. In wins he has 1,593 yards and 12 touchdowns. In losses he has 1,646 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Chiefs offense has struggled this season but Alex Smith has been consistent in wins and losses.

The Chiefs suspended Marcus Peters on Wednesday for his flag-throwing incident against the Jets. Peters threw a penalty flag into the stands after he disagreed with a holding call against Steven Nelson. He was not ejected from the game but left the field after the penalty. Peters was not disciplined by the league. The Chiefs decision to suspend Peters could hurt them this weekend but will hopefully prevent him from doing it again in the future.

Darrelle Revis made his first appearance with the Chiefs last week. He only played in 36 of the Chiefs 91 defensive snaps. He had five combined tackles in the game last week. Darrelle Revis is still getting up to game speed and should see a higher percentage of snaps this weekend.

The Chiefs will return home to face the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The Raiders ended the Chiefs division win streak earlier this season. Oakland is 3-1 in their last four games. Raiders receiver Amari Cooper suffered a concussion two weeks ago against the Denver Broncos. The injury status of Cooper will be important in the matchup because of the suspension of Marcus Peters. The Chiefs will need to get back on track this weekend in a matchup with a division opponent in the playoff hunt.
