Duelly Noted: Can the Blues Maintain their Hot 2017-2018 Start?

The St. Louis Blues are off to their best start in a long time under head coach, Mike Yeo. In October, they started the season strong by winning 10 games. Their only regulation defeats thus far were against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers. They were also beaten by the Vegas Golden Knights in overtime. Despite these defeats, they are 1st in the Central Division with a 11-3-1 record. 11 Wins has them tied with the Lightning with the most in the league. As far as the Western Conference goes, the Blues have the best record, the most points (23) the most goals for (50) and a +14 goal differential having lost only 1 game at home while going 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. Many fans are wondering if they can keep that pace up. That will depend on a few factors.

One of the Blues’ biggest acquisitions is Brayden Schenn. He has 3 goals and 12 assists and 2 of those 3 goals won the games for the Blues. He is efficient when it comes to setting up big plays. Schenn is off to a great start this season and there is no doubt the Blues benefited greatly by trading Jori Lehtera to get him.

As good as Schenn has been, he is not the only Blue that has been off to a hot start offensively, Jaden Schwartz has 8 goals and 12 assists. Vladimir Tarasenko is not far behind him with 7 goals and 9 assists. Even the defensemen are getting in on some scoring. Joel Edmundson and Alex Pietrangelo have scored 10 goals total and their newest defenseman Vince Dunn has 2 goals as well. A big key for the Blues will be keeping up the aggressive play and increasing their scoring even more.

The Blues have a lot of help from returning goalies, Jake Allen and Carter Hutton. Allen has a 2.46 goals against average while Hutton has a 1.67 average in the games that he has been in. Both goalies do a good job of making big saves at crucial points early in the season and keeping their goals against low. They are a real asset to this team and the Blues need more solid play from both Hutton and Allen to keep this run going.

Even with the injuries to guys like Patrik Berglund, Zach Sanford and Robby Fabbri, the Blues are in good shape and firing on all cylinders in their absence. Fabbri is not returning due to re-aggravating a knee injury in training camp but when the other players begin returning, hopefully the changes made for their returns do not upset their winning formula. As long as their offense remains hot and their goalies keep stopping shots like they have, this season is something spectacular for all Blues fans to witness.
