Royally Yours: Royals Biggest 2018 Needs

This off-season the Royals will have a lot of decisions to make about their roster moving forward. They will need to decide which free agents will help their team in the future. The Royals have a few holes in their roster that will need to be filled for them to become contenders again.

Starting pitching is one of the biggest needs for the Royals. Last season Royals starting pitchers had an ERA of 4.89, the fourth highest in the American League. Next season they will have Danny Duffy, Jason Hammel, Jake Junis and Ian Kennedy return. Jason Vargas will hit free agency this off-season. The Royals likely pick up a starting pitcher in free agency to fill their fifth spot in the starting rotation. Tyler Chatwood could be a target for the Royals this off-season. Chatwood has a career ERA of 4.31. He has spent most of his career pitching with the Colorado Rockies. His numbers could be inflated because of the thin air in Colorado. His numbers could drop if he moved to a larger park.

Depending on where Lorenzo Cain signs this off-season the Royals may need another outfielder. The Royals have Alex Gordon and Jorge Soler but would need a third starter. Paulo Orlando could fill the spot but they would eventually need a permanent solution. Former Royal Jarrod Dyson will be a free agent this off-season and he could be a great fit at center field if the Royals do not re-sign Lorenzo Cain. Last season Dyson had 28 stolen bases and a fielding percentage of .991 at center field. Dyson is not a big offensive threat but is quick and a good defensive outfielder.

This off-season the Royals will also have the option to trade players away for prospects. The Royals farm system is ranked very low and they will need to improve it to have success in the future. The Royals could trade away catchers or third basemen, which are two of their deepest positions. The decision not to be sellers means the Royals will need to eventually make trades to improve their minor league system.

The Royals will have important decisions to make this off-season about free agents and trades. The team has a few holes that could be filled this off-season. The Royals will still have a good roster even if they lose the players hitting free agency. If the Royals improve their weak spots they could be playoff contenders again.
