Royally Yours: 2015 Postseason/World Series

The 2017 World Series will start this week between the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers. Two seasons ago the Royals faced the Mets in the World Series. It was the second consecutive World Series for Kansas City. The Royals won in five games to clinch their first World Series championship in 30 years.


The Royals had an outstanding regular season in 2015. They finished first in the American League Central with a record of 95-67. The Royals were the #1 seed in the American League and clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Their first opponent of the 2015 postseason were the Houston Astros who defeated the New York Yankees in the wild card game.

The first two games of the American League Division Series between the Royals and Astros were in Kansas City. Astros won the first game 5-2. In game two the Royals fell behind 3-2 after three innings but came back to win 5-4. The series went to Houston in game three. Dallas Keuchel had a strong performance for the Astros and led them to a 4-2 win. Game four started off poorly for the Royals and they were down 6-2 after 7 innings and facing elimination. They had a five run rally in the eighth inning, which put them in the lead. The Royals would eventually win the game 9-6. The deciding fifth game was back in Kansas City. Johnny Cueto pitched eight innings and led the Royals to a 7-2 victory. The Royals won the ALDS against the Astros 3-2.


The American League Championship Series was against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Royals won the first two games in the series in Kansas City 5-0 and 6-3. The Blue Jays came back in Toronto to win two of the three games. When the Royals returned to Kansas City they were only one game away from a spot in the World Series. After 7 ½ innings the game was tied 3-3. In the middle of the eight inning the game was delayed for 45 minutes because of rain. Eric Hosmer had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the eighth when he drove in Lorenzo Cain from first base. The Royals won the game 4-3. Alcides Escobar was named the ALCS MVP.

The Royals faced the New York Mets in the 2015 World Series. The Royals took the lead in the first game of the World Series off of a first pitch inside-the-park home run from Escobar. After nine innings the game was tied 4-4. The Royals would eventually win the game 5-4 in 14 innings. In game two Cueto pitched a two-hit complete game. The Royals won 7-1. The series moved to New York in game three. The Mets won the first World Series game at Citi Field 9-3. In game four the Royals were down 3-2 after seven innings. They had a three run eighth inning and won the game 5-3. In game five the Royals fell behind again. They were behind 2-0 after eight innings. The Royals tied the game in the ninth and forced the game into extra innings. In the 12th inning the Royals scored five runs, which sealed the victory. Salvador Perez was named the World Series MVP with a .364 batting average. He was the first catcher to win the award since 1992.


2015 was a great season for the Royals. They had a strong regular season and exciting postseason capped off by their first World Series win in 30 years.
