Who Are The Redskins So Far? It’s Hard To Tell

Football season in Washington has been really good so far. Or really bad. It all depends on which week you look at.

Week one, an ugly home loss to the Eagles. Ugh-ly.

Weeks two and three, impressive wins against the Rams and Raiders, particularly the latter, as the Redskins played as strong a defensive game as they have in several seasons in shutting down Derek Carr and crew.

Then last week, another step backwards, in a tight loss on the road to the league’s last unbeaten, the Chiefs.

So what’s the verdict a quarter of the way in the season as the Redskins head into their off week? Well, any breakdown has to start with Kirk Cousins and his play at quarterback.

So far, his numbers show that mix. Right at 1,000 passing yards (1,004 actually) and 7 touchdowns to just 1 interception is solid, as is being ranked 8th in total quarterback rating. But he’s also fumbled five times, perhaps a byproduct of some concerns in the offensive line.

The running game has done well with a combination of Rob Kelley, rookie Samaje Perine and most notably Chris Thompson putting in contributions to make the final product pretty decent.

Thompson managed just 27 total yards against the Chiefs, and the overall resulting struggles showed how valuable he is becoming.

Defensively it’s been a mixture. The Eagles poked a lot of holes in things. But the Redskins held the Rams below their league-leading season average and totally shut down the Image result for josh norman redskinsRaiders.

Injuries are a concern though. Josh Norman will miss two to three games with a fractured rib. Linebacker Martrell Spaight also suffered a rib injury against the Chiefs. And on the other side of the ball, Jordan Reed, Trent Williams and Josh Doctson have all been banged up and will seek to heal up during the off week.

The NFC East is interesting so far. The Cowboys have stumbled a bit, losing last week to the up-and-coming Rams. The Eagles look a lot better, and the Giants look like a wreck so far, with a struggling running game and inconsistency all over the place.

It adds up to the Redskins being in the hunt to do good things. And as it’s been for several years, a lot will continue to ride on the shoulders of Cousins, a proposition that makes many fans groan. But that’s the bed the organization has chosen in which to lay, and when good Kirk comes to play, it’s a move that can look good.
