Royally Yours: Week in Review

The Royals wrapped up their season this week. They started their week against the Yankees in New York. It was a make-up of the May 25th game that was postponed. The Royals lost the game 11-3. Their second match-up of the week was against the Detroit Tigers at home. The Royals won 2 of 3 games in the series. The final series of the season was at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Royals won the first two games but lost the final game.

The American League Wild Card race was tight this year and the Royals stayed in the hunt until the final week of the season. The New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins clinched the two Wild Card spots. The American League Central was close for most of the season but the Cleveland Indians pulled away in the last month. The American League Central will be represented by the Indians and Twins in the postseason. The Royals finished third in the American League Central standings with a record of 80-82. The Royals will have some key players hit free agency this off-season. Lorenzo Cain, Alcides Escobar, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Jason Vargas will all be free agents. It is unlikely that the Royals will be able to keep the core roster together. Next season the Royals will probably be in a rebuilding mode but will still have Danny Duffy, Alex Gordon, Whit Merrifield and Salvador Perez on the roster.

Jason Vargas finished the season tied for the most wins in the MLB. He finished with a record of 18-11. Clayton Kershaw, Carlos Carrasco and Corey Kluber also finished with 18 wins. Vargas led the Royals in wins and ERA this season.

Mike Moustakas also had a strong season. He finished with 38 home runs this season, which led the team and was tied for fifth most in the American League. He also broke the Royals single season home run record.

The Royals will have until November 7th to make upcoming free agents a qualifying offer. If the players decline the offer they will hit free agency on November 8th. The Royals will play their first regular season game of the 2018 season on March 29th at home against the Chicago White Sox. This offseason will be important for the Royals because the decisions they make will have a big impact on the future of the franchise.
