Titans @ Texans Preview Week 4

Every opponent is capable of beating you in the NFL. Each game is one you want to win. Some games you want to win just a little more than others. Those would be the divisional games. They’re like fighting your brother over who gets to use the cool X-box Elite controller and who uses the standard one. The Titans won their first divisional game against Jacksonville. This Sunday at NRG Stadium comes the second challenge in the Houston Texans. It will not be an easy one. The Texans enter into the game with 1 win in 3 tries. One of those loses was to the same Jaguars that Tennessee defeated. If the Titans defeat the Texans that will give Houston 2 divisional losses in 2 games. They will be desperate to stop that from happening. The Titans need to play with that same sense of urgency to make that happen.

The Texans defense is built on a talented, angry front seven. Jadeveon Clowney already has 3 fumble recoveries including one returned for a touchdown. Don’t be fooled by the kind compassionate JJ Watt you’ve seen on the internet recently. The hurricane relief work he did and the money raised to help those in need was fantastic. It would be an honor to thank that man. That man, however, will not be at NRG stadium this Sunday. The JJ Watt that has harassed Titan quarterbacks through his 10-game career, accumulating over 15 sacks in that span will be there. The Titans have done an excellent job protecting Mariota in the pocket. They will need to be laser focused to keep it that way.

It is rare that Tennessee’s Marcus Mariota is the elder statesmen quarterback of a game but he will be in this one. Mariota has completed 60% of his passes this year and thrown 3 touchdowns against only 1 interception. Houston’s rookie DeShaun Watson actually has a slightly better completion percentage at 61.3%, his passes have also wound up in the end zone 3 times. He has turned it over through the air 3 times. The Titans must look to turn Watson over and keep him in the pocket as he leads the NFL in rushing yards among quarterbacks with 124 from scrimmage. Mariota is 6th on that rushing list with 77 yards.

Both teams want to run the football and control the clock. The Titans were 2nd in the league in rushing yards going into the week and the Texans were 7th.  There is no reason for either team to change philosophies here. I do think the Titans hold an edge if the game becomes a shootout. In the end, I think it’s too much maturity on offense for the Titans.  Titans 27 Texans 21 #TITANUP
