Tomahawks and Touchdowns: Week #1 Recap

The Chiefs played their first game last Thursday against the New England Patriots. The game was the first regular season game in the NFL this season. The Chiefs won the game 42-27 despite being heavy underdogs. It was a big victory against a likely AFC playoff team. The win last week could have an impact on the playoff seeding at the end of the season.

Alex Smith had a strong performance in the win last week. He went 28/35 for 368 yards and four touchdowns. He was named the AFC offensive player of the week because of his performance. Alex Smith played a big role in the Chiefs win over the Patriots.

The Patriots were 103-0 in the Tom Brady Era when leading at the start of the 4th quarter until they met the Chiefs last Thursday.

Rookie running back Kareem Hunt had a breakout performance in week #1. He rushed for 148 yards and one touchdown. Hunt was drafted in the third round of 2017 NFL Draft. He was named the starter in the preseason after Spencer Ware suffered a season ending injury. Kareem Hunt’s strong performance last week is a good sign that the Chiefs have depth at running back despite losing their original starter.

Eric Berry suffered a torn Achilles in the game last week. He is expected to miss the entire season. Berry played well holding Rob Gronkowski to two receptions and 33 yards. This off-season Berry signed a six-year contract with the Chiefs. He is a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro. Eric Berry is one of the leaders of the Chiefs defense and his injury will have an impact on the secondary.

 

The Chiefs are currently tied for first in the AFC West. The Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders also won their week #1 match-up. The AFC West is expected to be one of the toughest divisions this season. After week #1, the AFC West already looks like it will be competitive.

In week #2 the Chiefs will play the Philadelphia Eagles at Arrowhead. It will be Andy Reid’s second game against his former team. The Chiefs won the first match-up in 2013, 26-16. It will be the first time Eagles head coach Doug Peterson will face the Chiefs. Peterson was the Chiefs offensive coordinator from 2013-2015 and was an assistant coach for Andy Reid in Philadelphia from 2009-2013. Last week the Eagles beat their division rival Washington Redskins 30-17 on the road. The Eagles looked strong in week #1 and this game will be another test for the Chiefs.
