On Monday, the Lions worked out a group of four punters including: Jeff Locke, Matt Darr, Drew Butler and Richie Leone.

Come Tuesday, the Lions announced that they had signed Locke to a contract.

Locke was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL draft at 155 overall, ten spots ahead of Sam Martin, who is currently on Detroit’s PUP list.

The Lions were in need of a punter after Sunday’s 35-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals because Kasey Redfern, who was filling in for Martin, suffered a season-ending knee injury. Redfern went down with a torn ACL, MCL and a partially torn patellar tendon. He has been placed on injured reserve.

Locke, 27, spent the previous four seasons in Minnesota and spent this training camp as a member of the Indianapolis Colts. During those four seasons as a Viking, Locke punted the ball away 290 times and averaged 43.2 yards per punt.

Martin will miss at least the next five games. Until then, Locke is expected to handle the punting duties for the Motor City.
