Royally Yours: Week in Review

The Royals had another outstanding week winning four of six games. They started their week at home against the Boston Red Sox. The Royals won the series 2-1. Their weekend series was at home against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Royals won the series 2-1. They had one of their biggest comebacks of the season on Friday night when they scored four runs with two outs in the ninth inning to win the game. The Royals have not lost a series in the month of June. The Royals successes this week helped them move up in the division and wild card standings.

 

Kansas City is currently third in the American League Central standings. The Minnesota Twins lead the division with a record of 39-34, 2.5 games ahead of the Royals. The Cleveland Indians are second in the division with a record of 39-35, 2 games ahead of the Royals. The Royals are also making up ground in the American League wild card race. The Cleveland Indians currently hold the second wild card spot, 2 games ahead of the Royals. If the Royals continue to win they will move up in the division and wild card standings.

The Royals designated Chris Young for assignment on Friday. Young had a breakout season with the Royals during the 2015 season. He had an 11-6 record and a 3.06 ERA. His contributions were a big part of the Royals winning the division for the first time in 30 years. He has struggled the last two seasons in the bullpen. In 2016 he had a 6.19 ERA and has a 7.50 ERA in 2017. Chris Young was a major part of the World Series run for the Royals in 2015 but his struggles the last two seasons are why he was designated for assignment last week.

 

Neftali Feliz was signed on Friday to fill the space made by designating Chris Young for assignment. Feliz is a right-handed pitcher who will fill a spot in the bullpen. Feliz had a strong start to his career with the Texas Rangers from 2009-2015. He was named an All-Star and American League Rookie of the Year in 2010. He was the Rangers closer during the 2010 and 2011 seasons when they made two straight World Series appearances. The signing of Neftali Feliz will add experience to the Royals bullpen.

The Royals will start the week on the road against the Detroit Tigers. They are 1-2 against the Tigers so far this season. The Royals weekend series will be at home against the Minnesota Twins. They are 1-7 against the Twins this season. It will be important for the Royals to pick up wins against the Twins in the four game series because it could have a big impact on the division standings. Overall, it will be a crucial week for the Royals with two match-ups against division opponents.
