Derek Carr Is Now The Highest Paid Player In The League

The Raiders on Thursday made Derek Carr the richest man in the NFL. Carr signed a five-year, $125 million dollar extension with $40 million guaranteed, $70 million in total guarantees and a $12.5 million dollar signing bonus according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. This deal surpassed Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck as the highest paid player in the league in terms of average money per year.

Before breaking his leg, the 26 year old and two time Pro Bowler was the 2016 leading candidate in the MVP race. In three seasons Carr has thrown for 11,194 yards,81 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. Carr was coming into his final year of his rookie contract, which was worth less than $1 million dollars in base salary a year. This could be the start of more quarterback deals that could get done before the season. Matthew Stafford and Kirk Cousins could see huge dollars coming their way. With Carr getting the money that he got, both players respective agents will press to get similar or even more money for their clients.

The Raiders, who have a core of talented young players will look to lock up players like Kahlil Mack and stand out guard Gabe Jackson long term. Mack is under contract until 2018, but he will likely look to become one of the highest paid players in the NFL next off-season.
