Green & Gold Week 5 Keys

The Green Bay Packers return from their week four bye with three consecutive home games in just over a week and a half. Back to back Sunday games followed by a Thursday game. While the schedule is compressed it is good the Packers will not play on the road again till the second to last day of October. This is an important stretch to the direction of the Packers season beginning with a home game going to a national audience on Sunday night against the Giants. Here are the Packs keys to victory on Sunday night.pack-giant

Win the turnover battle: The Giants defense has not forced a turnover this season in four games. Contrast that with a Giants offense that has committed a total of seven turnovers (four by way of interception and three by way of lost fumble). The Giants therefore have a turnover ratio of minus 7.That is one of the worst turnover ratios in the league. The Packers on the other hand have a turnover ratio of positive one.Turnover margins are always key to winning NFL games but it might be an even more telling statistic Sunday night given the Giants problems in that area this year.

Opportunity knocking: Jared Cook was hurt in the Detroit game prior to the bye. His high ankle sprain will reportedly cost him over a month of time. Therefore there is opportunity for the other Packers tight ends like Richard Rodgers to step up and have an increased role in the offense.mikedaniels

Not running here: Mike Daniels and the Packers linebackers have been demolishing opposing running games. The run defense has been the best in the league allowing under 2 yards per carry. That’s excellent and it needs to continue as it really limits an offenses options when they are unable to run the ball. The message of the Packers run defense has been simple in the first three games. Sorry but you are not running here.

Improve pass defense: For as good as the run defense has been the pass defense has struggled to equal levels. Sam Shields will miss a third consecutive game with a concussion. The secondary as a whole has struggled this season. Some of the reason for the struggle is the Packers have a fairly young secondary. Their play needs to improve as they have allowed 991 passing yards over the first three games. The Giants have a talented set of receivers and the secondary will again be challenged this week with trying to slow down Eli Manning.
