Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which details everything in women’s wrestling in the past week, beginning with Monday’s Raw and ending with Bound For Glory.

charlotteflairRaw came off the Clash of Champions event, which saw Charlotte defeated Bayley and Sasha Banks to remain Raw’s Women’s Champion. Charlotte’s usual boasting was interrupted by Sasha Banks, who demanded a one-on-one rematch, which she will get on the following Raw. Meanwhile, on SmackDown Live, the tag team match that was supposed to happen actually went on as promised, and in the end, Carmella and Natalya defeated Nikki Bella and Naomi, when the Princess of Staten Island rolled up Nikki. I still sense a grudge match happening at No Mercy. Raw’s Clash of Champions had a double dose of women’s action. I think the blue brand may do the same regarding No Mercy. Speaking of that event, Alexa Bliss made her intentions known when she ambushed Becky Lynch during her entrance.

Speaking of a double dose of women’s action, NXT had just that, starting with the evil Mandy Rose becoming Ember Moon’s latest victim; coming a week after Mandy’s scathing interview blasting Ember. Also, Liv Morgan’s chance against Asuka didn’t go as planned, as she was defeated by the NXT Women’s Champion in about a minute. An exclusive online segment showed Liv being taunted by Billie Kay and Peyton Royce. I sense a tag team match coming, and I do believe that Aliyah will step up and serve as Liv’s partner. What would be better is if Aliyah turns heel against Liv during that match, forcing Liv to find more reinforcements, maybe Ember Moon and a babyface Daria.rosemarycenter

Thursday’s final Impact before Bound For Glory featured two Knockout matches. First off, Laurel Van Ness’ first singles match; a victorious outing against Madison Rayne. Secondly, Reby Sky and Rosemary clashed, ending in a DQ win for the former, who ended up put through a table by Rosemary. Maria and Gail Kim were supposed to participate in Lethal Lockdown, but Gail ended up chasing Maria out of the arena.

Last night’s Bound For Glory was an epic event. Before Gail’s championship opportunity, she was officially inducted in the TNA Hall of Fame. Even better, former KOs Christy Hemme, Taryn Terrell, and Awesome Kong all appeared to take part in Gail’s induction, making this an epic moment. Later on, Gail successfully defeated Maria Kanellis, the long time bane of her existence, to capture the Knockouts Championship for the sixth time. Maria’s night, as well as her husband’s, became much worse, as they were both taken down by Cody and Brandi Rhodes, who were making their TNA debuts. Brandi is best known for her time in WWE as Eden Stiles, serving as a ring announcer from 2011 until early this year.

gailkimringapronFor Gail, her six Knockouts Championships tie the record set by Angelina Love. Notice how the records in WWE and TNA’s women’s divisions are held by Canadians. Trish Stratus has the most WWE Women’s Championships with seven. Maryse was the first ever two-time Divas Champion, and her first reign stood as the longest reign until AJ Lee surpassed her in 2015. Gail also has two more milestones; she was the only woman to win the WWE Women’s Championship in her WWE debut, she was the first ever Knockouts Champion, and she has the longest Knockouts Championship reign ever.

Happy birthday this past Friday to former WWE Women’s Champion Candice Michelle, who turned 38! Candice’s WWE career began as part of the Diva Search in 2004, and she began her first angle a year later, when she became part of the villainous Vince’s Devils trio that also consisted of Torrie Wilson and Victoria. By 2007, Candice was pushed as an improving wrestler, leading to her Women’s Championship victory at that year’s Vengeance:  Night of Champions event. After losing the title to Beth Phoenix, Candice broke her clavicle in a rematch on Raw, and would be riddled with injury problems up until her release in 2009. Candice was most recently shown on WWE programming on an edition of Table For 3 that aired on the WWE Network in May of this year, which also featured Michelle McCool and Molly Holly.saralee

News broke yesterday that WWE released female Tough Enough winner Sara Lee. Sara Lee participated in last year’s contest and was named the winner amongst the women. She made her NXT debut in January, but hadn’t competed much since then. Along with the news of Sara Lee’s release came news that she is pregnant with her first child with NXT’s Wesley Blake. It’s a downer that Sara Lee’s gone from WWE, but congrats to her and Blake on becoming parents!

A new week begins with Charlotte and Sasha Banks clashing over the Women’s Championship on Raw. Also, it’s the final SmackDown until No Mercy, and we’ll see the fallout from No Mercy! Until next week!
