Into the Cardinals Nest: Which Cardinals Have Had the Best Season in 2016 So Far?

As of Wednesday, the Cardinals are in a 3 way race for a spot in the NL Wild Card game. The next 8 games of the season are very important in deciding whether they make the playoffs. The 2016 Cardinals have not been as dominant as their 2015 counterparts but many players have all had their chance to shine and their continued efforts could help the Cardinals in the playoffs should they make it that far.

Seung Hwan-Oh is a force when he gets on the mound. He started as a setup man for Trevor Rosenthal and took his place as closer when Rosenthal began to struggle mightily in the middle of the season. He has 18 saves with a 1.79 ERA in 2016 so far. The closer role is something that the Cardinals had problems with for a while.  If Oh is able to keep getting on the field and close games out, Cardinal Nation will be adamwainwrightbreathing easy come playoff time.

On any ordinary season, Adam Wainwright is a reliable ace in the Cardinals starting rotation. However, where he has really succeeded in 2016 is at the plate. He has 6 runs on 13 hits with 18 RBI’s. He has even hit 2 home runs. Wainwright has put together a decent showing at the plate this year, proving that teams can’t look past the bottom of the batting order in the National League.

aledmysdiaz3Cardinal bats have been on fire this season, especially when it comes to home runs. Many people did not expect much when they acquired Jedd Gyorko from the Padres but he is helping to boost the Cardinals offense in a big way. His best showing in 2016 was in a 2 game series against the Padres when he hit a home run in nearly every at bat he had. He has 27 home runs and 54 RBI’s to his name so far. Another batter that is impressing is Aledmys Diaz. He got off to a good start in the season but missed some of the season to a thumb injury. His momentum has stalled slightly but he is an RBI machine with 61 to his credit so far. If he can get his power back in time for the playoffs he will be a very deadly hitter in the Cardinals batting order once again.

The next few games will decide the Cardinals season. This season had a lot of downs but the Cardinals still have a bunch of talented guys that can get them to the playoffs. Right now, their three main missions are to get to the wildcard, win the wildcard and upset the heavily favored Chicago Cubs in the NLDS. All it takes is every member of the Cardinals clicking at the right time. No matter the result, this is a team with plenty of excitement still to come.
