Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which recaps everything in women’s wrestling in the past week, beginning with Monday’s Raw.

coccharlotevssashaThis week was about finding contenders to both of WWE’s Women’s Championships, and on Raw, there was a dispute over whether Sasha Banks or Bayley should get a title shot, due to Bayley’s victory over Charlotte. Dana Brooke did make a statement of her own in the segment, when she delivered a slap to Charlotte after being on the receiving end of more verbal abuse, and that prompted Mick Foley to have Dana, Bayley, and Sasha all fight each other for a title opportunity at Clash of Champions. Of course, Sasha won, which only makes sense because WWE actually promoted Charlotte vs Sasha a week prior, so this booking on Raw really is strange.

Regarding the SmackDown Women’s Championship, Alexa Bliss won a Fatal Five-Way to become #1 Contender for Becky Lynch’s newly won title. This was a huge step considering she was the first one eliminated in the title match at Backlash. Both championship bouts will be featured on the WWE Network, as Sasha vs Charlotte will be part of next Sunday’s Clash of Champions, while Alexa vs Becky will take place at No Mercy on October 9.lynch-vs-bliss

The next night’s NXT continued the rise of Liv Morgan, with a victory over the evil Rachel Fazio (aka Rachael Ellering). After the match, Liv announced that she wants to go after Asuka and the NXT Women’s Championship, and I do see that match happening. However, the next Takeover is two months away, so we should see this happen most likely some time on an edition of NXT in October, because I do sense that WWE wants Asuka as champion entering November, so she’ll face Ember Moon.livmorgannxt2

Maria’s news gets worse and worse every week. After a terrible attempt at inducting Gail Kim into the Hall of Fame, Dixie Carter came in and announced that Gail will be inducted at Bound For Glory and that she’ll be in the #1 Contender’s Gauntlet Match. The match would see the long overdue debut of Chelsea Green, under the name Laurel Van Ness, and she would eliminate Madison Rayne and Marti Bell before being ousted by the eventual winner, Gail Kim. So it will be Maria vs Gail at BFG, and one has to wonder if they’ll really have Gail win. Because a HoF induction is virtually the same as retirement, but on the other hand, having Gail go through all of this abuse of power from Maria and not win in the end doesn’t make much sense. So we’ll see what happens in two weeks.

Happy birthday on Monday to Eva Marie, who will turn 32! Eva received a lot in time for her b-day; for one, her suspension is over. Also, Eva Marie was cast in a movie that stars Nicolas Cage and Nicky Whelan. In the upcoming film, Inconceivable, Eva will play Angela, the wife of Cage’s character, and the couple brings in an abused mother named Katie (Whelan), along with her young daughter. Angela notices odd behavior from Katie that makes her question what Katie’s true intentions are. No word on when the film will be released (obviously sometime in 2017), but filming will begin next month.emmanewlook

Also, Emma returned to WWE after a months-long injury hiatus, doing so at a live event as a guest referee in a six-woman tag team match. It took two years after her incident, but Emma is clearly back on track as far as her stock is concerned. Last year saw her sent back down to NXT, where Emma turned villainous and engaged in feuds with Bayley, Charlotte, and Asuka, all while aligning with Dana Brooke. This year saw the evil Emma back on the main roster, competing at WrestleMania before her alliance with Dana was back on with her own call-up. It was because of Emma’s injury that the Dana/Charlotte alliance happened, and now that Emma’s back, many believe that she’ll return as a babyface and realign with future babyface Dana. The match she officiated included Raw’s women, so she will definitely return as a member of the red brand.

A new week begins tomorrow, and will end at Clash of Champions next Sunday! Until then!
