Wrigley Weekly Wrap-up

Starter John Lackey has been placed on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to August 15th) with stiffness in his right shoulder after leaving his last start early. Reliever Hector Rondon will join him on the disabled list (retroactive to August 17th) with discomfort in his right triceps. For the corresponding move, the Cubs selected the contracts of right-hander Felix Peña and left-hander Rob Zastryzny. “If we have guys that need time to get rest, you give them time to get well,” manager Joe Maddon said. “You don’t want to push that, because on the back side, you can have a big negative. With both John and Hector, we’ve thought about it. Where we’re at, record-wise, makes it easier, but it’s still the right thing to do, regardless.” On Saturday, reliever Mike Montgomery made his first Cubs start in Lackey’s place against the Rockies in Colorado.

The Cubs’ No. 20 prospect, according to, Zastryzny was the club’s second-round pick in 2013 out of the University of Missouri. He became the first pitcher drafted under the Theo Epstein regime to join the Cubs. Peña is the Cubs’ No. 25 prospect, per They both had their Major League debuts on Friday night in Colorado and they pitched scoreless ninth and 10th innings. Zastryzny escaped a bases-loaded jam against the heart of the Rockies’ lineup, and Peña pitched a clean inning with two strikeouts.

The onesies are making a comeback! The Cubs opened a nine-game National League West trip on Friday and they packed their pajamas for the flight home from Los Angeles. Joe Maddon has revived the “onesies” trip, which requires players to wear their pajamas for the flight back to Chicago on August 28th. Some of the players and members of the coaching staff will recycle the onesies they wore on August 30th, 2015. You might recognize that date because that’s the day Jake Arrieta threw his first career no-hitter against the Dodgers. Unfortunately, Arrieta isn’t scheduled to start the August 28th game at Dodger stadium. Maddon and Kris Bryant bought new onesies for the trip. Pitcher Justin Grimm plans on wearing a robe and slippers.

Other Injury News: Outfielder Chris Coghlan and reliever Joe Smith were both placed on the 15-day disabled list. Coghlan was placed on the DL with a right rib contusion and Smith with a left hamstring strain. Right-handed reliever Spencer Patton was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Right-hander Trevor Cahill, who was activated from the disabled list last week and was the 26th man for the doubleheader, will stay with the team.

Side Notes: Tommy La Stella finally ended his holdout and reported to Double-A Tennessee on Wednesday. As we all know, La Stella went home instead of reporting to the Minor Leagues when he was optioned in late July. He singled in his first at-bat on Wednesday then was hit by a pitch. La Stella will not only get at-bats at Tennessee, but will eventually move up to Triple-A Iowa.
