Into The Cardinals Nest: What do the Losses of Matt Holliday & Seth Maness Mean for the Cards?

The Cardinals are  in a race for the second wildcard spot with the Florida Marlins. With their victory over Houston on Tuesday, the Cardinals are a game ahead. Unfortunately, this did not happen without some bad news along the way. Matt Holliday suffered a fracture in his right thumb and elected to have surgery in hopes of coming back later in the year. Cardinal reliever, Seth Maness, tore a ligament and is going to undergo Tommy John surgery. The ramifications of these injuries are huge. However, the injuries could also open the door for a possible deal and for other players to step up.

Prior to his injury, Matt Holliday had managed to get 97 hits in 2016. He hit 19 home runs and had 60 RBI’s. The Cardinals will miss his power bat going forward.  The rest of the team is now going to have to increase their offensive productivity to make up for him being absent. Adding Carlos Gomez is a good option for the Cardinals. They have shown some interest in him Despite his recent struggles, he would be a great help in the outfield if the Cardinals could get help him get right. They would also be getting a little more speed when it comes to base running.  Carlos Gomez has a mere 5 home runs and 29 RBI’s so his offense needs work if he’s going to match Holliday’s performance but if the Cardinals were to sign him and he were to improve, the Matt Holliday injury will not mean much in the long run. Otherwise, the rest of the offense will need to pick up their efforts while he recovers.

The Seth Maness injury is tough for the Cardinals because it highlights that they didn’t get too much bullpen help at the trade deadline. Seth Maness had 16 strikeouts in 2016 but he is more known for getting hitters to ground into double plays when the Cardinals need them most. The little help that the Cardinals did get is serving them well.  Zach Duke has done better since his Cardinal début and Alex Reyes has stepped up in his first few appearances for the Cardinals since coming up from Memphis but they need to keep doing well to allow Seung Hwan-Oh to get into games and close teams down.

This bad news should not affect the Cardinals chances too badly. The Central division is race is unwinnable now but the Cardinals are known for their resiliency and fighting spirit. They should win as many games as possible to keep the Marlins out of the playoffs so they can attempt to win it all in October and the Cards still have all the tools necessary to do  that.  The Cardinals have made it to the playoffs consistently even if they have injuries. 2016 will be no exception.
