Tomahawks and Touchdowns: Preseason Update

The Chiefs first preseason game was last Saturday and they lost a close game to the Seattle Seahawks 17-16. This week they will play the Rams in Los Angeles. Preseason games are important because it gives the Chiefs a glimpse of what the team will look like in the regular season.

MarcusPeters2Kansas City’s first-team offense looked great against one of the best defenses in the NFL. Alex Smith led the Chiefs down the field on the opening drive and Spencer Ware scored on a one-yard rush. The defense was also impressive. Marcus Peters intercepted a Russell Wilson pass in the red zone. It was a big play early in the game and Peters looks like he could be even better in 2016. The Seahawks pulled out a win with a two-point conversion at the end of the game. Despite the loss the Chiefs were impressive in their first preseason game.

The Chiefs received good news Tuesday when Jamaal Charles was removed from the physically unable to participate list. Charles tore his ACL in week 5 and missed the remainder of the season. It is unlikely he will see any playing time in the preseason but the Chiefs are hopeful that he will be ready for week 1. Jamaal Charles has been a key weapon for the Chiefs offense since he was drafted in 2008. He has been to four Pro Bowls and is a two time All-Pro. It is important for the Chiefs to have Charles healthy this season.Kansas-City-Chiefs-RB-Jamaal-Charles-ready-to-return

One of the biggest position battles this season is at quarterback. The Chiefs have five quarterbacks on the roster and they will need to make a tough decision at the end of training camp about who to keep and who to cut. Alex Smith will be the starter and Nick Foles will likely be the backup. The important competition is for the third string quarterback. Tyler Bray, Aaron Murray and Kevin Hogan will all compete for the role. Aaron Murray led with 59 passing yards but none of the quarterbacks threw for a touchdown. The position battle is far from over and it will be something to keep an eye on during the remainder of the preseason.

The second preseason game for the Chiefs will be Saturday against the Rams. It will be the Chiefs first game in Los Angeles since 1994. The Rams won their first preseason game last week against the Cowboys. The Rams have a very good defense and it should be another test for the Chiefs offense. The two teams faced off in the preseason last year in St. Louis where the Chiefs won 24-17.
