The Pinstripe Post; A-Rod, Judge & Austin

Welcome to the latest edition of The Pinstripe Post, which details the past week of action involving the New York Yankees.

This past week was all about Alex Rodriguez, as he was in the final week of his MLB career. Unfortunately, he wouldn’t see much action in the three game series at Fenway, as he did not play at all on Tuesday, entered as a pinch hitter on Wednesday, and actually did play in Thursday’s game. The Yankees took two out of three in Fenway, with Rodriguez picking up an RBI that went five feet from the plate in Thursday’s game.

Rodriguez played his last game on Friday, in front of the home crowd. It was the first of a three game set against the lowly Tampa Bay Rays, and with Chris Archer on the mound, Rodriguez picked up his final RBI of his career; a double that drove in Brett Gardner in the first inning. The Yankees won the game, 6-3, with the RBI serving as Rodriguez’s only hit of the game. A-Rod even played third for the first out of the ninth inning, before leaving the field to an emotional standing ovation.

The last two games were about the young players, namely prospects Aaron Judge and Tyler Austin, who hit back-to-back home runs in Saturday’s day game. The HRs were two out of five hit by the Yankees in Saturday’s affair, which the team won, 8-4. Unfortunately for the Yankees, the four-game inning streak came to a bad end with a 12-3 loss on Sunday. Even in defeat, Judge and Gary Sanchez added two more HRs to the young guns’ tally. Luis Severino, now with a 1-8 record, was sent back down to the minors after his outing on Sunday.

Currently at mid-August, the Yankees stand at 60-57, 4.5 games out of a playoff spot, with the Red Sox, Tigers, Mariners, and Astros standing over the team. This week, the Yankees have a home series against the first place Blue Jays; three games starting tonight. After an off day on Thursday, the Yankees will head to Anaheim for a three game weekend set against the Angels. Until next week!
