USA Mens Basketball: Lesson Learned.

Kyrie Irving RIO

I’m sure we all saw the near impossible outcome of the United States vs. Australia game, and if you’re like me, I’m sure you enjoyed not only the thrill of back and forth game, but the whole the “Aussies” opened up, that could spell trouble if these 2 teams face again.

From this, there are a few takeaways that should be noted.

1)ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK!

Patty Mills RIO

Australia basically made the stars of our beloved game look like an AAU team, when they had them looking up at a 12 point deficit. Although by the half they trimmed it to 5, the “Aussies” were just 2 quarters away from doing what no other team has done in almost 3 Olympiads. Australia at 1 point was shooting 68% from the field! On the U.S. team! Not China, or Venezuela, but the U.S.! They basically carved them from the outside on in, making pocket passes to the paint for a slam or layup, that let them walk away with 23 Assists as a team, against only 17 from the United States.

2)DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE!

on Day 1 of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at Carioca Arena 1 on August 6, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It’s one thing to be somewhat nervous about your competition, but being scared is completely out of the question for Australia, when it came to picking pockets, and challenging shots. Andrew Bogut had a team high 3 blocks to go with his 15 points and even came away with a steal. Matthew Dellavedova, was being Matthew Dellavedova, contesting passes and staying active. He did have 11 assists by the way. The point is however, Australia was able to keep the best of the best to an ugly low of 37%. Keep in mind that says a lot when you hold players like Klay Thompson to 2-9 shooting from the field, and Kevin Durant 4-16.

3)THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING!

Australia Team RIO

Spain was the only underdog chosen to even have a remotely small chance at beating this team, and presently they don’t look like their old selves. Enter Australia, with a fresh core of athletic, hard nosed, physical players that only care about how hard they’re playing. I’ve never heard of Cameron Bairstow who chipped in 6 points with 1 block and steals apiece, or David Anderson who showed some great post play and exploded for 13 points and 5 rebounds. One thing is scary though, look at the guys that are missing from this team. Dante Exum, Steven Adams, or Thon Maker. If you haven’t thought of this yet, mark my words they will be back. The talent down there is only growing.
