The Pinstripe Post

Welcome to the latest edition of the Pinstripe Post, which covers the last week in action involving the New York Yankees!

MasahiroTanaka (1)Entering August, the once red hot Yankees had suffered a four game losing streak on the road against Houston and Tampa Bay. At long last, the 20th annual Subway Series took place, with two games at Citi Field and two in Yankee Stadium. Ten innings were needed to win the first game, with Starlin Castro’s sac fly being the difference, but the second game saw the Yankee offense fail to provide runs for Masahiro Tanaka. In the home half of the series, the Yankees won big, by a score of 9-5, but could not solve Bartolo Colon this past Thursday, resulting in a split in the Subway Series.

The Yankees remained at home this past weekend against the Cleveland Indians, who were the team’s last opponents of the first half of the season. Friday’s game saw the Bronx Bombers win big by a score of 13-7, but on the following day, the Yankees fell short due to CC Sabathia not getting support from the offense. Tanaka was on the mound for Sunday’s rubber game, which the Yankees won 3-2 to take the series. The Yankees finished at 5-2 against the first place Indians.MarkTeixeira2

Entering this week, the Yankees are 56-55 and are five games out of a playoff spot. Off the field, the team was hit with the news that not one, but two seasoned veterans are hanging it up this season, as Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez announced their retirements. Teixeira’s announcement came on Friday, and Rodriguez’s announcement came two days later. Neither vet is having a stellar season; both have been marred with injuries and poor hitting. Once upon a time, both players played key roles in the Yankees’ 2009 World Series Championship, but this season hasn’t gone well for either player. Teixeira will play out the season, but Rodriguez will play his last game this Friday.

This week, the Yankees head to Boston for three games against the Red Sox beginning on Tuesday, followed by a three game home set against the Rays. Until then!
