Smack Down Smack Talk

What a rebound night for Smack Down tonight.  Last week’s episode was sub- par, but tonight was definitely their best show since the WWE Draft.  There was plenty of appearances by the roster: We saw the debut match of American Alpha, where they defeated The Vaudevillians.  Also debuting (or re-debuting) was Eva Marie, who showed a leg injury before her match against Becky Lynch ever began.  Natalya began a feud against Carmella that initiated during a Renee Young interview, led to a match being scheduled against these two, then resulted in an ambush attack by Natalya on Carmella.  Again, before the match ever began.  A #1 contender match for the Intercontinental title was held between Baron Corbin, Kalisto, & Apollo Crews.  Predictably, Apollo won & will now Face Miz at Summer Slam for the belt.  But tonight was really about 3 feuds: Cena/Styles, Ambrose/Ziggler, & Orton/Lesnar.

Randy Orton/Brock Lesnar

Randy gained national spotlight on ESPN last night with his RKO Outta Nowhere on Brock Lesnar.

Well tonight, Brock got his revenge & it was foreshadowed to begin tonight’s show.  Shane, Daniel Bryan, & Randy began the show by discussing the attack last night. Orton was told that while the event was “pretty awesome”, he would face repercussions later & that additional security would have to be added to keep Brock Lesnar out of the arena.  That did not go so well.  Randy’s “repercussion” was a match against Fandango.  During the match, Lesnar appeared through the crowd, to deliver an F5 to Orton.  Lesnar was escorted out shortly after.

While this retaliation probably won’t make SportsCenter, the result was effective for their feud.  This story is just beginning & let’s see where the two separate brands let it go to…..

John Cena/A.J. Styles

You can say what you want about John Cena. Most fans will do it unprovoked. Chants of “Let’s Go Cena” or “Cena Sucks” follow him everywhere.  What has always been undeniable is his draw.  The guy can wrestle.  He’s a 15 time World Champion.  He represents everything the WWE wants in their stars.

And the guy can cut one hell of a promo.

A.J. Styles arrived to begin berating Cena, when he was quickly interrupted by Cena.  What followed was arguably one of the best promos this year by both competitors.  Cena spoke of his love for the WWE, its fans, & the opportunity it affords him to do so much good around the world.  He would continue on to characterize A.J. as a whiner & tell him that if things don’t go his way, he’ll pick up & go wrestle somewhere else…..because he’s done it before.  The ending result was a one on one match between the two set for Summer Slam.

Dolph Ziggler/Dean Ambrose

In my opinion, this was the promo of the year.  I love “shoot” (honest, straight-forward) promos, or as close as you can get to them nowadays.  This definitely contained a lot of truth in it, from both competitors.  Sit back & enjoy….

The byproduct of this promo was the validation match against Bray Wyatt for the right to face Dean Ambrose for the WWE Championship at Summer Slam.  The match was both quality & necessary to further the storyline of this feud into Summer Slam.  However, I feel that WWE kind of blew the ending before the match even began.  They ran an advertisement for Dolph’s appearance on SportsCenter tomorrow evening.  Why would ESPN book Dolph for an interview, if he was no longer facing Dean Ambrose in the main event of Summer Slam?  The crowd was behind the idea of Wyatt winning & the idea of babyface Ambrose versus heel Wyatt is the traditional match set up for WWE.  The ad should have run before the promo in the beginning of the show.  Trust me, fans won’t forget it.  If that’s their concern, re-run the ad after Dolph’s victory.  Duh.

All in all, much better show this week than last.  Fans should be excited for next week’s episode after tonight’s epic Summer Slam build.
