Rockies; Buyers or Sellers?

The Colorado Rockies have been on fire recently, since the All-Star Game they have a 10-4 record and their starting pitchers have lined up for a 6-0 record and a 1.85 ERA. Of course they also have those huge bats in Nolan Arenado, Carlos Gonzalez, Trevor Story, etc. So, with a 50-52 record, Should they try upgrading their team for a possible playoff run? In my opinion, they should still be sellers, Why?

The Rox are in line to face the following teams in order Mets, Dodgers, Marlins, Rangers, Phillies, Cubs and Nationals, Dodgers. Yes, it should be a rough month of August for the Rockies. So, unless the team really believes they are better than all the teams named previously, they shouldn’t give up their farm system, instead re-stock it. Their future is bright, they have ( according to the MLB ) the #8 prospect in SS/2B Brendan Rodgers, the #20 prospect in OF David Dahl and the #46 prospect in  RHP Jeff Hoffman. Still not naming a few.

Now, Who should they sell?

Well, they could definitely get a top prospect in exchange for OF Carlos Gonzalez, the outfielder is having a .317/.370/.544 with 20 HR and 64 RBI, not much to say here, many contenders would fight and give up their top prospects for the services of an OF of this caliber.

Another good trade candidate is OF Charlie Blackmon, lets face it, you are not getting your next Clayton Kershaw or Mike Trout in exchange for an almost 31 year old outfielder, but you could definitely pick up a back of the rotation starter or a future staring position player. Blackmon’s having his best season since the 2014 year he had with the Rox. In 2016 he is hitting .299/.340/.441 with 12 HR and 44 RBI. Obviously, he is not a game changer for a contender, but he is a very good extra bat or a solid back up in case of an injury. You need to have at least one of those type of players in a contender team. If Colorado has suitors for him, they should pull the trade ASAP.

Boone Logan

Last but not least, a very good trade bait is LHP Boone Logan, a good reliever, possibly the set-up man or closer the Blue Jays, Giants and Nationals are looking for? He is almost 32 years old, he holds a 1-0 record, 1/1 save, 34 K, 2.42 ERA and a brilliant 0.86 WHIP. He might even have more value than Charlie Blackmon for most teams.

So, no, the Rockies should not even consider buying, for the goodness of the franchise, they should look for MLB ready or almost ready prospects if possible, all this wining is for sure good for the team, they raise the value of their players and the younger bucks start learning the winning ways in the MLB. They have the pieces, the only question is, Will they move them correctly?
