Tomahawks and Touchdowns: Training Camp Kickoff

The Chiefs 2016 season officially began Tuesday when rookies and quarterbacks reported to training camp. There are a lot of questions and concerns surrounding the Chiefs this season. Jamaal Charles and Justin Houston are still recovering from injuries and Eric Berry is not expected to report to camp. The Chiefs will also have a crucial backup quarterback battle this year. Training camp is always important but this year it could have a huge impact on the Chiefs season.

JamaalCharlesJamaal Charles was placed on the physically unable to preform list to start training camp. This setback was not expected but the Chiefs are confident that he will be ready soon. Charles tore his ACL for the second time last season and missed 11 games. Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware helped fill the hole left by Charles last season. Jamaal Charles needs to stay healthy this year to prove that he is still one of the most dynamic players in the league.

The Chiefs announced Tuesday that Justin Houston is expected to miss training camp. Houston had a surgery earlier this year to repair his ACL and LCL. He is expected to miss some playing time this season but it is unclear how much time he will miss. Justin Houston has been one of the best defensive players in the NFL the last couple years. In 2014 he had 22 sacks, which led the NFL and was the most in Chiefs history. Justin Houston’s return is crucial to the Chiefs success this year.

EricBerryThe Chiefs failed to sign Eric Berry to a long term contract earlier this month and it is expected that he will not be at training camp Friday when veterans report. Berry is not required to show up to training camp because he did not sign a long-term contract with his franchise tag. Eric Berry is expected to miss the majority of training camp and it is unlikely that he will play this preseason. Eric Berry was the AP Comeback Player of the Year, All-Pro, and Pro Bowler last season.

Quarterbacks reported to training camp Tuesday and the position battle is already underway. Alex Smith will be the starter this season but the backup battle will be intense. The Chiefs have four quarterbacks on their roster but will likely only keep three. Aaron Murray and Tyler Bray both have experience with the Chiefs system but do not have enough playing experience to distinguish themselves. The Chiefs drafted Kevin Hogan this off-season and he will also compete for the backup role. It should be an interesting position battle this training camp and preseason.

The Chiefs opened training camp this week and there are a lot of questions and concerns about the team. Jamaal Charles and Justin Houston are both returning from injuries and their future this season is uncertain. The Chiefs will miss Eric Berry who is not expected to be at training camp due to failed contract negotiations. The Chiefs will also have an important quarterback battle this season. The Chiefs training camp this year will be the foundation for their success.
