Women’s Wrestling Wrap Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which details everything in women’s wrestling in the past week, beginning with last Monday’s Raw and ending with last night’s Battleground.

Raw and SmackDown were all about the preparation for the Draft, all the while, a tag team contest pitting Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch against Charlotte and Dana Brooke became a melee when Natalya got involved and attacked Becky, allowing Charlotte and Dana to beat down Sasha. SmackDown Live the next night had the BOSS challenging both women in a handicap match, and falling short despite a game effort.

NiaJax2Meanwhile, the big news in the Women’s Division surrounded the draft, as three women from NXT were drafted to the main roster. The first of these women was Nia Jax, the powerhouse of the NXT women, as she was drafted to the Raw brand on the live program. On the supplemental draft on the WWE Network, Alexa Bliss and Carmella were both drafted to the SmackDown brand. With Eva Marie being drafted to SmackDown, this separates Nia from her longtime NXT ally, while Carmella will be separated from the Raw-exclusive tag team of Enzo and Big Cass. Nevertheless, the call-ups were a long time coming for all three NXT stars.

Speaking of NXT, Bayley and Nia Jax faced off for the final time on the program, with Bayley emerging victorious and looking ahead to the NXT Women’s Championship. Later that night, it was the finale of Ultima Lucha Dos, and the event saw Taya defeat Ivelisse after Catrina got involved and took down Ivelisse. It looks like we could finally see Catrina compete inside the squared circle in Season 3! The new Thursday Impact featured the State of the Knockouts address, which ended with Madison Rayne attacking Gail Kim from behind, after Maria Kanellis promised a “handsome reward” to anyone who takes out Gail. TNA was well represented at SHINE 36 the next night, as Knockouts Raquel, Marti Bell, and Allysin Kay all picked up victories in their respective matches. Lucha Underground’s Ivelisse successfully defended the SHINE Championship against Su Yung.

BayleyAs we all expected, Bayley was Sasha Banks’ “surprise” partner against Charlotte and Dana Brooke, and as we also expected, the babyfaces were victorious, most likely setting up Charlotte/Sasha at SummerSlam. Later on, the evil Natalya emerged victorious against Becky Lynch, and I hope we see more of her in action now that the grudge match is over. Bayley stated in an exclusive video that her appearance was for that night, but I do see her being called up after SummerSlam; she’s long overdue.

In other women’s wrestling news from this past week, Nikki Bella has been cleared to return to the ring, as she posted a photo of the WWE Performance Center and stated that it was her next stop. Nikki has been out due to issues with her neck since last October. WCW and WWE alum Torrie Wilson celebrated her 41st birthday yesterday. Torrie’s career spanned nearly a decade, beginning as a villainous valet in WCW. She joined the then-named World Wrestling Federation in 2001, doing so as one of the evil Alliance women along with Stacy Keibler. The role lasted a few months, until Torrie turned babyface and defected to the Federation. Torrie competed in WWF/E from 2001 until 2008, and has been out of the ring since then.

On a final note, expect to see more of WWE Hall of Famer Lita on the Network. Lita appeared on SmackDown’s pre-show this past Tuesday, and the story is that she’ll become a regular on the program as well as other kickoff events. Lita has mainly worked backstage in the last couple of years, only appearing on the Network on the NXT Takeover kickoff shows, beginning with last year’s NXT Takeover:  Brooklyn event.

A new week begins tonight, as does the Brand Extension. Regarding the KOs, Gail and Madison will face each other on this Thursday’s Impact Wrestling. Until then!
