Predicting 5 MLB Deadline Moves

We are getting closer to the famous MLB non-waiver deadline and rumors are swirling all around the league. MLB teams have until Aug. 1 to trade for players for the contention run or trading away veterans to stock their farm system.

Some names to watch are Andrew Miller, Jonathan Lucroy, Jay Bruce, Aroldis Champan, etc… In this blog, I am predicting the MLB trades we could see before the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline.

Jonathan Lucroy to Cleveland Indians

Jonathan Lucroy

Catcher Yan Gomes will be out for six to eight weeks (which hasn’t slowed down the 56-39 Indians). But this might be a way too good opportunity to pass up. Even if Gomes was healthy, acquiring the 30-year-old would be huge for them. Lucroy’s currently batting .305 with an .854 OPS and .362 on-base-percentage.

Multiple sources have reported that the Indians and Rangers are the front runners for the services of Mr. Lucroy. The Indians might have their best opportunity in decades to compete for the World Series, if they really believe they are contenders, they should pull the trade.

Aroldis Chapman to St. Louis Cardinals

Aroldis Chapman

Many have him going to Washington, I don’t see it happening.

First of all, Washington has a very good closer in Jonathan Papelbon, they don’t need Chapman, and second of all, they are not willing to give up their best prospects. I think they should hang the phone up if they are not willing to give up their top pitcher Lucas Giolito. The Nationals can get a good relief pitcher ( Joe Smith, Koji Uehara, Dellin Betances ) without giving up a top prospect. That’s why I see the St. Louis Cardinals taking him.

The Cardinals are, –surprisingly– well in playoff contention, and need a closer, they don’t have that super prospect to make the deal, but they could give up their current struggling Closer, Trevor Rosenthal and a minor leaguer, that way you get Kevin Siegrist as your 7th inning man, Seung Hwan Oh as your 8th inning man and put Aroldis Chapman there to close it.

Rich Hill to Texas Rangers

Rich Hill

This one is pretty easy, the Rangers desperately need Starting Pitching help, Rich Hill could definitely give them that and more. Texas can get him without giving up one of their top prospects ( Profar, Gallo ).

Matt Moore to Los Angeles Dodgers

Matt Moore

There has been reports that the Dodgers are close to acquire Chris Archer, that’s not happening. The Tampa Bay Rays are well out of contention and are officially sellers, but Archer is a very good, controllable, strike thrower. The Dodgers are being asked too much for Archer, but it is evident that they need pitching ( especially with reports that Clayton Kershaw could need surgery ).

A very good option for the pitcher-needy Dodgers is Matt Moore. He owes a 6-7 record, 4.31 ERA in 20 games played this year. He would definitely bolster the rotation and is also controllable, has a team option for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons.

I believe the Dodgers need to get away with this one to continue their tough road for World Series contention.

Melvin Upton Jr to Baltimore Orioles

Melvin Upton Jr

The Padres and Orioles have reportedly discussed a Melvin Upton Jr – Ubaldo Jimenez and prospect deal, and I believe it helps both teams. The O’s need a LF to continue their hot hitter line-up but also a LF that brings them defensive help, Melvin can give them just that.

Upton Jr is having a breakout season with a .260/.309/.448 season, also with 16 HR and 44 RBIs, he deserves being with a contender and the Orioles deserve him. Currently the Orioles are on a Left Field By Committee or something like that, Melvin Upton would settle them in that Left Field spot and could be the last piece they need to go all the way this year.

On the Padres side, they would save money on that trade and also give up an Outfield space to one of their many prospects in Hunter Renfroe or Alex Dickerson, also the Padres would get one more prospect to their already super stocked farm system ( Currently ranked No.2 by MLB experts, just behind Atlanta’s) .

So I see this as a Win-Win for both teams and even a “W” for Upton Jr and Hunter Renfroe/Alex Dickerson/Manny Margot.

Other trades that COULD happen are:

SP Jeremy Hellickson to Miami Marlins

OF Jay Bruce to Los Angeles Dodgers

C Derek Norris to Texas Rangers

RP Jeanmar Gomez to San Francisco Giants

OF Matt Kemp to Seattle Mariners
