The Chiefs have until Friday to sign Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry to a long-term contract. Both sides expected a deal to be reached before the deadline but talks have apparently slowed down between the two parties. The Chiefs placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Berry in March. The Chiefs will need to make a decision about Eric Berry’s contract by the end of the week.EricBerry

Eric Berry was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in December of 2014. The diagnosis ended his season. Last July it was announced that he was Cancer free. He was able to resume football activities last preseason. He returned stronger than ever in 2015.

Eric Berry had one of his best seasons last year. He was elected to his fourth Pro Bowl and was named a first-team All Pro. Eric Berry also won the AP NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He started the season backing up Husain Abdullah but regained his starting job week two. Eric Berry has always been valuable to the Chiefs but he distinguished himself as an elite safety last season.

If the Chiefs do not sign Eric Berry to a long-term contract by Friday Berry would be able to sign with another team. If another team signs Berry they would have to surrender two first round picks to the Chiefs. The Chiefs were in a similar position last season with Justin Houston. The Chiefs signed Houston at the deadline preventing negotiations with other teams.

Eric Berry is very important to the Chiefs and they will need to find a way to have him on the roster in 2016. Berry had 61 combined tackles and two interceptions last season. The Chiefs secondary lost a lot of talent this off-season and Eric Berry would provide veteran experience to a young position group. Eric Berry’s talent and experience is invaluable to the Chiefs and they will need to find a way to keep him in 2016.

The Chiefs have until Friday to sign Eric Berry to a long-term contract and prevent negotiations with other teams. Eric Berry had one of his best seasons in 2015 after returning from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Eric Berry has been one of the most impactful players for the Chiefs throughout his career and in 2015 he became one of the best secondary players in the league. The Chiefs need to find a way to sign Berry to a long-term contract and return to the team for the 2016 season.
