Royally Yours: Week in Review

The Royals played the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies last week and had mixed results. They played a home and away series against St. Louis. They split the first series at home and won the away series. Their weekend series was in Philadelphia against the Phillies. They lost the series 2-1. Their overall record last week was 4-3.

lorenzoCainThe Royals are in third in the American League Central behind the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers. They are six games behind the Indians and a half game behind the Tigers. The Royals will face both teams when they return from the All-Star break. Despite being third in the AL Central the Royals are still five games above .500.

Lorenzo Cain was placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a hamstring injury. The Royals will miss his offensive and defensive presence. Cain has a .290 batting average and a .985 fielding percentage this season. Royals recalled Brett Eibner from Omaha to add depth to the outfield. The Royals will need to have players step up to fill the void Cain leaves.

Kendrys Morales has been hot lately for the Royals. He had three home runs last week. In Saturday’s game he hit a home run from both sides of the plate. He has a .264 average and 14 home runs this season. Last week he played right field because of the injury to Lorenzo Cain. He will not be the long-term solution for the Royals but he is enough for now. Morales turned his season around in June and is one of the most consistent players for the Royals right now.

The Royals pitching staff continues to struggle this season. They have given up the most home runs and the third most walks in the American League so far this season. The Royals team ERA is above four and Danny Duffy is the only starter with a winning record. The starting rotation will need to improve for the Royals to make a playoff run in the second half of the season.

The Royals will play the Blue Jays and Mariners next week. The Royals will start off the week on the road in Toronto in an ALCS rematch. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season. The Royals will return home for their weekend series against the Seattle Mariners. The Royals lost the series in the last meeting between the two teams in Seattle. It will be an exciting week because all three teams are currently in the Wild Card race. This week could prove to be important at the end of the season.
