Mile High Magic: QB Decisions

The Denver Broncos are coming off a victory over the Carolina Panthers in Superbowl 50. This upcoming season’s expectations are very high, as they should be. But, besides the whole “Von Miller Contract” situation, one other question still remains to be unanswered. Who will be the starting quarterback week one against Carolina? I’m Jonathan Larson and in Mile High Magic, I’m going to break down all three quarterbacks on the roster and tell you who I think should be under center week one.

Let’s start with the lone quarterback who was on the roster last year. Number three, Trevor Siemian. There’s really not a lot to say about Trevor Siemian. He was a 7th round draft pick in 2015 out of Northwestern. At Northwestern, Trevor finished with a 58.9 completion percentage, throwing for 5,931 yards, 27 touchdowns and 24 interceptions. That’s not bad for guy who only started 14 games. I don’t see why he couldn’t be the starting quarterback, I mean he has been in Gary Kubiak’s system the longest, but he doesn’t have the experience that you want to put into your starting quarterback. Last year, he only played one snap, which was a kneel down in a week 15 loss at Pittsburgh. Do I see potential, no question. Enough potential to start him right now, absolutely not.

MarkSanchezBroncosNext, we’re going to move on the seasoned veteran, Mark Sanchez. In the off-season after Superbowl 50, the Denver Broncos acquired QB Mark Sanchez from the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2017 conditional draft pick. When people hear the name Mark Sanchez, people seem to think of two words: “butt fumble.” However when I hear his name, I think of the two straight AFC Championships he took the New York Jets too. Although, he didn’t win either of them, he showed he could manage a team very well, which is exactly what the Denver Broncos need. However, I do not think that Sanchez is the right guy to put in the starting role. He has been slumping over the past couple years. His best year came in 2011, where he threw for 3,474 yards, 26 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. His numbers have been dropping since then. In Philly, he was brought in as more of a second option, which I think he will be in Denver. He does however have a chance to win the starting quarterback job, as it is still up in the air. Only time will tell.

PaxtonLynchBroncosFinally, let’s talk about the rookie, the man who Broncos fans think can and will be a star at Quarterback in a few years, that’s right I’m talking about the 1st round pick by the Broncos in the 2016 NFL Draft, Paxton Lynch from Memphis. Lynch was a guy who coming into the draft, did not have a specific spot he would go like Jarrod Goff or Carson Wentz. Some NFL analysts had him going in the mid 1st round, others had him not even going in the first round. But, Denver saw what I saw, A young, hungry guy who was willing to put in the hours in order to be successful. Also, not to mention he has a fantastic arm. Last year at Memphis, Lynch threw for 3,778 yards with 28 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. That’s a 7 -1 touchdown to interception ratio. And,to compliment his arm, he isn’t afraid to get out of the pocket and gain the yards himself. Lynch rushed for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns. He reminds me of a “Big Ben” type of quarterback. He’s enormous, standing at 6’7 and 245 pounds. He trusts himself enough to make the difficult throws, but knows when he has to tuck the ball down and either extend a play or rush for the first down.

All and all, I believe Paxton Lynch should be the week 1 starter. I know Lynch hasn’t seen a single snap, but I believe he will put in the work that he needs to take control of the position in Denver. The broncos traded up in the first round for two reasons. One, they knew if they didn’t trade with Seattle at 26, Arizona would have chosen him. And, two, they know exactly what he is capable of and knows his talent has no ceiling. John Elway and Gary Kubiak see a franchise quarterback in the making, as do I. So, why not plug him in right now?
