Bulls on Parade; Rose Exits, Valentine Shines

It was a very busy week for the Chicago Bulls, who are in full future mode. This week marked the end of the Derrick Rose era on the North Side, and Thursday marked the beginning of the career of Denzel Valentine in red and black.

What went wrong with Rose? The ultimate Chicago kid couldn’t stay? It hit a point where the Bulls needed to cut ties, and the trade is one that seems a bit one sided. Besides losing Holliday, the Bulls don’t give up much. No offense to the former MVP but Rose hasn’t been himself, at least for the most part, in the past few years.

The Bulls acquired Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant (a steal) and Jose Calderon in the trade. How do the Bulls not win in that scenario? Grant is a player still developing his game further, and I expect him to break out this season. Lopez adds more depth with the pending back and forth with big men as free agency begins, and Calderon is a solid option at the point or at least a filler.

SpencerDinwiddieThe Bulls also acquired Spencer Dinwiddie for Cameron Bairstow. Bairstow never really fit in with Bulls fans, and I don’t expect him to be all that missed.

Moving on to draft night, the Bulls had one of the steals of the night, in my honest opinion. In what world does a player who was one or two on most college award ballots not go in the top five? Denzel Valentine is lethal in nearly every aspect of the game, with the ability to play all five positions if needed. Pending issues from previous knee injuries, Valentine should fit in great on the Northside.

In the second round, the Bulls took Paul Zipzer from Bayern Munich, no not the Bundesliga champs. Zipzer seems strong from the perimeter and has grown into more of a small forward role. It seems like a stash pick, with the hope that he continues to develop before making the leap.

With free agency finally getting underway this week, it wouldn’t be crazy to think the Bulls might make some moves. Don’t expect Durant in black and red, but this roster is far from set.
