The Lucha Lowdown

Welcome to the latest edition of The Lucha Lowdown, which recaps the latest edition of Lucha Underground!

Night-ClawThe seven medallions that are part of the Gift of the Gods Championship are up for grabs once again, and within the first few minutes of the program, the first medallion was given to LU’s new warrior Night Claw, who looks like a wrestling equivalent of the Marvel superhero Black Panther. As for the other six, all were awarded that night, in three separate matches.

The first one had Daga facing off against Mascarita Sagrada, who still had the managerial services of Famous B, but has not won since then. As per usual, the devious Kobra Moon wasn’t too far away; perched from above watching as the object of her affection as of late went on to defeat Sagrada to pick up one of the medallions, leaving five remaining. Sagrada’s losing skid under Famous B continued, and it was at that moment that Famous B ruthlessly beat down his now former client; something I expected sooner. I was wondering how long it would take before Sagrada’s losses got to him, and Sagrada failing to get that medallion was the last straw.

The next match featured strange bedfellows, as Joey Ryan, Cortez Castro, and Mr. Cisco faced off against Marty The Moth, Killshot, and Sinestro de la Muerte. Yes, you read that right. Marty and Killshot on the same side after two brutal matches against each other; one of them ending with Marty taking Killshot’s dog tags, making this a personal rivalry. Meanwhile, Cisco still feels betrayed by Joey and Castro after learning that they are undercover cops. And SDM? Well, let’s just say that calling him a “wild card” would be an understatement. Despite this, Marty, Killshot, and SDM won their match, and each of them received medallions. With the partnership over now, Marty shoved Killshot into the official, and took the dog tags.

LuchaUndergroundWomenIn a historic main event, the final two medallions were decided in Lucha Underground’s first ever women’s tag team match, which, IMO, was the most epic thing I’ve seen in two seasons of the program. It was another strange bedfellows situation, as Ivelisse and Taya were paired up against a more unlikely pairing of Sexy Star and Mariposa, making the twisted and villainous luchadora’s first appearance since losing a No Mas match to Sexy Star. There was in-fighting between both teams, but in the end, Sexy Star and Mariposa emerged victorious, and both women received medallions. This makes the Gift of the Gods Championship match very interesting, as Marty and Mariposa will be opponents.

For the whole show, we were wondering what Prince Puma’s announcement regarding Ultima Lucha Dos was. I had a feeling that Puma would challenge the legendary Rey Mysterio, and that is exactly what happened! Also, as I just learned from Lucha Underground’s Twitter page (@LuchaElRey), Ultima Lucha Dos will be split into three parts, airing on July 6, July 13, and July 20!

That’s the Lucha Lowdown! Until next week!
