Tomahawks and Touchdowns: Off-Season Storylines

EricBerryThe Chiefs wrapped up OTA’s last week and there are some major storylines going into training camp. There are a few position battles that will determine the success of the Chiefs in 2016. Linebackers, quarterbacks and running backs are the three biggest position battles entering training camp. The Eric Berry contract is also looming over the Chiefs this off-season.

The linebacking corps will be one of their best position groups for the Chiefs in 2016 but there are still some questions about who will be the playmakers. Dee Ford could have a breakout year for the Chiefs. He had four sacks last season. If Justin Houston is not at full strength when the season begins he could make a big impact. Dee Ford’s progress in training camp is very important to the Chiefs defense.

The Chiefs currently have four quarterbacks on their roster and the competition for second and third strings will be one of the biggest storylines in training camp and preseason. The past two seasons the Chiefs kept four quarterbacks on the roster but it seems unlikely that they will do this in 2016. Tyler Bray was listed as the second string quarterback on the OTA depth chart. This is likely just a formality and because the quarterback competition is wide open. The Chiefs will probably cut either Tyler Bray or Aaron Murray. Kevin Hogan will probably be safe because he is a rookie. The competition between Bray and Murray will be one to keep an eye on.ChiefsRunningBacksCenter

The Chiefs have a lot of talent at running back and the distribution of carries will be a big storyline. Jamaal Charles is one of the best running backs in the NFL and will get the majority of the carries. The competition for the second string running back will be intriguing in training camp. Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware were both signed to contract extensions in March. Both players played an important role in the Chiefs offense when Jamaal Charles tore his ACL last season. The competition between the two running backs will be important because the winner will have an important role in the Chiefs offense.

The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Eric Berry earlier this year and they will have until July 15 to sign him to a long-term deal. A deal is expected to be worked out and Eric Berry could get a huge contract. Eric Berry was a Pro Bowler and a first-team All Pro last season after returning from lymphoma.

The Chiefs have some important position competitions entering training camp. Linebacker, quarterback and running back will be the most competitive position battles this season. The outcome of these position battles could have a big impact on the Chiefs season. The Chiefs still need to work out a long-term deal with Eric Berry. It will be an important off-season for the Chiefs and there will be some important decisions about the future of the Chiefs entering training camp and preseason.
