Boxing’s 1-2 KO Punch

Vasyl Lomachenko (6-1, 4 Kos) made history this past Saturday night again winning the junior lightweight belt in only his seventh professional fight. He looked better then expected landing quick and accurate punches to overwhelm Roman Martinez (29-3-3, 17 KOs).  Martinez 33, who was making only his second title defense of his current reign could not make any adjustments during the fight because of how well prepared Lomachenko was.”I couldn’t see his hands,” were the comments Martinez made after the fight.  Martinez struggled to connect on punches only landing 19 percent compared to the 43 percent of punches landed by Lomachenko. lomenchenko vs martinez

Lomachenko might be the best pound for pound fighter in the world as he impressed many including his promoter Bob Arum.

“Muhammad Ali is the greatest of all time,” Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said. “We have a lot of great champions at Top Rank but Vasyl Lomachenko is the greatest in our time. What a spectacular performance.”

Lomachenko certainly looked impressive as we will look to see who he will defend his newly won Junior lightweight title against.

John Molina Jr ( 29-6, 23 kos) out slugged Ruslan Provodnikov ( 25-5, 18 kos) to retain his junior welterweight title by unanimous decision.  Molina was able to work his jab and land enough power shots to win to hold off Provodnikov. Provodnikov tried throughout the fight to get in a rhythm, but Molina was too quick and was able to sustain consistent defense.

Ruslan-Provodnikov-vs.-John-MolinaAll three judges scored the bout in favor of Molina jr. 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113. CleatGeeks.com scored the bout 116-112.

“It was a fight that we needed,” said Molina, who won his second fight in a row after three straight losses. “Ruslan Provodnikov is a very notable name. He’s a tough, tough guy. He kept moving forward.”

“People don’t realize I had my amateur career in the pros, and now it’s my time to step out and shine. I have a new trainer. Shadeed showed me how to throw punches and use my power. We knew we had to outwork Provodnikov.”

Copy box numbers show that Molina Jr landed a lower percentage of punches at 35 percent while Provodnikov landed at 40 percent. Although he landed a higher percentage it was clear to the eye that Molina’s punches were cleaner and more effective.

Provodnikov with this loss is now 3-4 in his last 7 bouts.” Today, the decision was the right one,” Provodnikov said through a translator. “Molina won the fight. He was better tonight. Everything was scored the way it should have been.”
