Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which details everything in the past week in women’s wrestling, beginning with last Monday’s Raw and ending at Slammiversary.

Honestly, I’m a bit worried about what WWE’s plan is regarding the women for Money In The Bank. We basically didn’t get much to go on last Monday, only an in ring confrontation between the warring duos:  babyface Becky Lynch and Natalya, and heel Dana Brooke and Charlotte. The segment had Becky and Nattie warning Dana about Charlotte and her backstabbing ways, and ended with Dana feigning leaving Charlotte only to attack Nattie from behind. It was reported that WWE actually does plan on having Charlotte and Dana feud with each other, but that may come much later.Maria&Sienna

Tuesday’s go-home Impact Wrestling saw Sienna emerge as the #1 Contender for the Knockouts Championship, after she defeated Madison Rayne. Later on, Maria and Mike Bennett were originally set to face EC3 and Gail Kim, only for Maria to replace herself with Allie, who was pinned by Gail, However, Maria did get the final word when she orchestrated an attack on Gail, which included Allie and Sienna, leaving Gail with a banged up knee just days before Slammiversary. Regarding Lucha Underground the next night, Black Lotus was informed that she’ll face Dragon Azteca at Ultima Lucha, while Ivelisse, Sexy Star, and Taya participated in a six-on-six main event for an opportunity at the Lucha Underground Championship.

Asuka-Nia-JaxThat same Wednesday night, Asuka successfully defended the NXT Women’s Championship against Nia Jax at NXT Takeover:  The End. So we should see the anticipated Asuka/Bayley rematch at the Takeover Brooklyn event in August. On the following evening’s SmackDown, we saw Dana and Becky at it again. The only difference was the result; Becky making Dana tap out, marking the first main roster loss of any kind for the villainous Dana. I still have no idea what WWE will plan for the four of them on Sunday. If a title match is going to happen, I honestly don’t know whether Charlotte will have a solo challenger or multiple challengers.

I do know one thing: we have a new Knockouts Champion! At Slammiversary last night, Sienna defeated Jade and Gail Kim to capture the title; with Gail being added to the match after Maria’s (legit) broken hand led her to bow out. So how did this happen? Gail was distracted by Allie and Maria, but that still left Jade. Marti Bell, Jade’s former Dollhouse cohort, appeared and took out Jade in the ring, allowing Sienna to capture the title. This, at the moment, changes things for SHINE 35, as Jade was booked to defend the title against Santana Garrett. Tomorrow night’s Impact is live and they’ll tape more episodes tomorrow and Wednesday, so there’s a chance Jade could get the belt back during the tapings. If not, Sienna will enter the event as Knockouts Champion, and could leave the event with that title and the SHIMMER Championship.

Deonna-Purrazzo-640x370Happy belated 22nd birthday to Deonna Purrazzo! Deonna’s birthday was this past Friday, and she has become an instant sensation since her debut at Knockouts Knockdown 2 in 2014. In the two years since then, Deonna has competed all over the independent circuit, and has also appeared several times in NXT. Also in 2016, Deonna made two appearances for TNA, the more recent one coming at Knockouts Knockdown 4.

A new week starts tonight and ends at Money In the Bank in Vegas! For the Knockouts, it’s the fallout from Slammiversary, and at Lucha Underground, Ivelisse and Taya will be two of six combatants fighting for an opportunity at the Lucha Underground Championship! Plus SHINE 35 this Friday! Until next week!
