Royally Yours: Week in Review

The Royals had a rough week losing four of six games. They were swept by the Orioles in Baltimore and won their series in Chicago over the weekend. The Royals offense struggled but started to get hot later in the week. The Royals had a combined six home runs in their series against the White Sox. Despite losing the majority of their games last week the Royals are still two games over .500 and in second place in the American League Central.

The Cleveland Indians are still leading the American League Central and the Royals are tied with the Tigers for second in the Division. The Royals are one and a half games ahead of the White Sox and 13 games ahead of the Twins. The Royals will have an opportunity to overtake the Indians when they play a three game series at home this week.

The Royals losing streak last week was caused by a lack of offense and pitching woes. The Royals only scored two runs in their three games series against the Orioles. The Royals pitching staff also struggled last week. In their four losses, the Royals pitching staff gave up an average of six runs per game. The Royals played better over the weekend. Danny Duffy and Yordano Ventura, the Saturday and Sunday starters both had 10 strikeouts and had a combined 0.69 ERA.

Whit Merrifield has been one of the most consistent players for the Royals so far this season. He has his safely in 18 of his first 20 games. He has a batting average of .305 and nine doubles this season. Merrifield has been one of the most surprising players for the Royals this season and his consistency has helped the Royals during their offensive struggles.

The Royals made news last week when they were involved in a brawl with the Baltimore Orioles. Yordano Ventura hit Manny Machado in the back with a 99 mph fastball. Machado charged the mound and started a fight with Ventura. Both players were suspended for their involvement in the brawl. Major League Baseball suspended Ventura for nine games and was fined an undisclosed amount. Ventura is appealing the suspension.

Next week the Royals will play two series at home against divisional rivals. The Royals will begin their home stand when they play a three game series against division leading Cleveland Indians. The Royals will face Josh Tomlin on Tuesday. Tomlin has been one of the best American League pitchers this season and has an 8-1 record so far this season. The Royals weekend series will be against the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers have a dangerous lineup, which can be one of the best offenses in baseball when they are hot. It will be a big week for the Royals and the American League Central standings. If the Royals play well they can move into first and get quality wins over divisional opponents.
