Into the Cardinals Nest: How Will Kolten Wong’s Option to AAA Affect the Team?

Jhonny-PeraltaThe Cardinals have not had the start to the year that many of their fans have come to expect. They are in dire need of a spark to revitalize their chances for the Central Division. The good news for the Cards is that Jhonny Peralta is back from the disabled list after recovering from an injury that took him out earlier on in the season. The move also involved sending second baseman Kolten Wong, to Memphis on Monday to make room for him on the roster. This move could affect the team’s play a great deal going forward.

Kolten Wong’s move to Memphis is a huge move by the Cardinals considering that the team had signed him to an eight-year contract just months before. However, since the 2016 season started, he has not been able to help the team much at all. He’s only managed 14 runs, a single home run and 5 RBI’s on offense. On defense, he has made 6 errors thus far in 2016.  As tough as the transition to the minors might be for Kolten, the Cardinals are hoping that he will rediscover his batting power and start scoring runs. If he wants to prove that he is worthy of being a Cardinal for eight years after the season he has had so far, going to Memphis for a little while to work on his offense and clean up his errors is the best thing he can do for the team now.Kolten-Wong

With the way the Cardinals’ offense has been up to this point, the Cardinals will not miss Kolten Wong too much in the short-term. The only real drawback offensively is that the team will lose Kolten Wong’s speed on the bases. He has three stolen bases so far in 2016,  Where they will miss him is on defense. While he does have those six errors, he has also managed to turn 31 double plays. The Cardinals’ success without him will depend on if the rest of the lineup can keep producing on offense. They will also need to make sure they clean up their mistakes in the infield. Hopefully, having Jhonny Peralta back in the lineup will help the team get back on track.

Every team needs a shakeup now and then and the 2016 Cardinals are no exception. If the Cardinals can start stringing together some wins and Kolten Wong does well enough in Memphis, there is no reason that this move is not beneficial for everyone involved.  Kolten Wong has a great opportunity to refine his game and if he does well enough, there is no reason he will  not return back in the lineup real soon and in return for that the Cardinals get a boost from a returning player. It’s a win-win situation all around if all goes right,
