Timberwolves Set Sights On Free Agency

JoakimNoahAs reported by Mitch Lawrence of Sporting News, Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau has made Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah a top free agent target.  Noah, 31, is an unrestricted free agent beginning July 1st and will draw interest from many teams. But the strong relationship Thibs and Noah shared in Chicago may carry over to Noah joining him in Minnesota.

Reports surrounding the Bulls organization is Noah prefers to sign with the Bulls but a problem occurs. The firing of Tom Thibodeau and the hiring of former Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg does not sit well with him.  Noah does not like playing for him and does not like where the organization is heading, despite his love for Chicago and many teammates on the Bulls.

Joakim Noah would be a great addition to the already young roster. A franchise heading in the right direction, Noah brings intensity and a wide range skill-set.  A great passer, pick and roll man, and rim protector, the former defensive player of the year would fit well next to Rookie of the Year Karl Anthony-Towns.  Thibs has all the right reasons to go after Noah and with the increase in salary cap, signing Noah should not be too much of a hassle for Thibs and the T-Wolves front office.

luolDengAnd what do you know, Luol Deng is an unrestricted free agent come July 1st as well. Rumors have surfaced that the Timberwolves will reach out to the thirty-one year old forward. Deng, averaged 12.3 PPG last season, is a great defender and adds yet another wing scorer to the current roster. Deng makes a lot of sense for the Timberwolves and the allotted cap room for next season allows the T-Wolves to make the move.

Noah and Deng are both natural leaders and thrived under Tom Thibodeau’s system in Chicago. Reuniting the three would be a great start to Thibodeau’s campaign and surrounds the young stars with proven veterans. Ricky Rubio, Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine, Karl Anthony-Towns,Nikola Peković, Gorgui Dieng and the T-Wolves fan favorite Kevin Garnett are all great players that when adding Deng and Noah to the mix, great things can happen in Minnesota.  But wait, Noah would bring an overload of big men to the roster.  Who would be the first to go? It would probably be Kevin Garnett.

First, Joakim Noah and Kevin Garnett on the court together just doesn’t seem to work. A history of hate between the two and the fact that both want to be the leaders of any team they are a part of would not work out well for the team’s moral.  If Noah recovers fully, Thibs would want to play a healthy Noah over 40 year old KG.

Garnett is owed eight million next season but possibility retirement is not out of the question. Realistically, KG retiring would be a huge green light for Noah to join the team.  But if KG comes back, it will for sure be interesting to see how they get along and how Thibs  handles the minutes between the two All-Star big men.

Tom Thibodeau is a great coach and has a great basketball mind. Despite a 29-53 season last year, Thibodeau is the new face of the franchise and looks to take the Timberwolves to the playoffs right away for they have not been since 2004.  And with the young core of players in place for years to come, the T-Wolves could bring in another supporting veteran by trading their No. 5th pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.  The Timberwolves are on the rise and Thibodeau knows what he wants and to our reasonable thinking, Joakim Noah and Luol Deng would be a great fit with the T-Wolves.
