Tomahawks and Touchdowns: Quarterback Competition Breakdown

The Chiefs lost their veteran backup Chase Daniel to the Eagles in the off-season and therefore will need to find a trusted second string quarterback to backup Alex Smith. The Chiefs drafted Kevin Hogan in the fifth round and he could eventually take Smith’s place in the future, but that is the future. We are talking about the 2nd string quarterback for the upcoming season, that will be here before you know it. The two major competitions in training camp will be between Tyler Bray and Aaron Murray to make the final roster and the battle for the second string spot.

Bray and Murray have both suffered ACL injuries in the last few years and durability could be a concern. They both have spent a few years in the Chiefs system and understand the Chiefs playbook. This could be an intriguing battle in training camp and the Chiefs will likely cut one of the two quarterbacks.

The other interesting part of the quarterback battle this off-season is which quarterback will be the backup. Kevin Hogan played in an NFL style offense at Stanford and should be prepared to run an NFL offense. The only issue with Hogan is his ability to play as a rookie. If Hogan does well in training camp and the preseason I think there is a good chance that he could win the second string job.

Overall, this off-season and training camp will be interesting for the quarterback competition. There are four talented quarterbacks on the roster and the Chiefs will likely only take three into the season. The second and most important part of the quarterback competition will be the battle for the backup position. The backup position is incredibly important in the NFL and the Chiefs will have three options to fill the position. Who will prevail and who will carry the clipboard? Only time and training camp will tell.
