Women’s Weekly Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up, which recaps everything in the past week in women’s wrestling, beginning with Monday’s Raw.

EmmavsBeckyOn Raw, we finally got the Becky Lynch/Emma encounter after the feud began shortly after WrestleMania. In the bout, “Evil Emma” emerged victorious, and I can’t help but think that Emma could be pushed within a few months. The last month has seen Emma on WrestleMania, and defeating Paige and Becky Lynch, who were once part of the upper echelon on NXT, so we could see some elevation for the Aussie sensation. Meanwhile, the fallout from the Chicago Screwjob at Payback resulted in Nattie placing Ric Flair in the Sharpshooter, followed by Stephanie McMahon announcing that Charlotte will defend the Women’s Title against Nattie once again at Extreme Rules, this time in a Submission Match and with Naitch banned from ringside.

Impact Wrestling saw Maria Kanellis once again attempt to ease her way to the Knockouts Championship, as she demanded that Jade lay down for her. When Jade refused, Maria brought in her insurance policy, the debuting Sienna, to take out the reigning Knockouts Champion. Of course, the woman dubbed Sienna in TNA is more commonly known as Allysin Kay on the indy circuit, and she recently took part in this year’s Knockouts Knockdown taping and defeated Gail Kim.

Wednesday featured Nia Jax defeating Tessa Blanchard on NXT, but the true highlight came on Lucha Underground, where Sexy Star and Mariposa main evented this past week’s episode as they competed against each other in a “No Mas” match. The bloody and brutal bout ended with Sexy Star finally overcoming her fears and taking down Mariposa, and her prize for doing so was one of the Gift of the Gods Medallions, now joining The Mack, Cage, Aerostar, Sinestro de la Muerte, and Texano on that short list. Thursday’s SmackDown featured Becky Lynch and Natalya defeating Emma and Charlotte; a tag team match combining both rivalries.

WWE-Diva-CameronSome side notes. Cameron was one of eight WWE talents released this weekend. Cameron began her WWE journey as part of Tough Enough in 2011; being signed one day after her elimination. She debuted in January 2012 as one half of the Funkadactyls with Naomi, and the partnership lasted until Cameron turned villainous in the summer of 2014. Since then, however, Cameron’s TV time was sporadic, and she was actually sent down to NXT in early 2016. Part of Cameron’s WWE career included serving as one of the original cast members of Total Divas during the show’s first three seasons.

Speaking of Total Divas, as I and many viewers expected, WWE is considering changing the name. Total Divas has aired on E! since 2013, but as we all witnessed, WWE did away with the “Diva” label at WrestleMania last month, so it’s no surprise that a name change is being considered. Reports state that E! wants to keep the name, and WWE is treading carefully in this situation. Five seasons of the program have aired, with a sixth on the way later this year.melina2

Finally, major congratulations to Melina, who was inducted into Empire Wrestling Federation’s Hall of Fame this past Saturday. Melina competed in WWE from 2005-2011, and in that span, she held the WWE Women’s Championship three times and captured the WWE Divas Championship twice. Since her WWE release in 2011, Melina returned to the independent circuit until taking a hiatus in the summer of 2012. After a three year absence, Melina briefly returned to the wrestling scene in June 2015, doing so at Maryland Championship Wrestling’s Ladies Night event. At the event, Melina served as the enforcer of the main event match between Amber Rodriguez and Mickie James for the MCW Women’s Championship, but during the match, Melina turned villainous and attacked Mickie, reigniting their WWE rivalry; however, Mickie won the title despite Melina’s villainous attack. Melina made a surprise appearance on the Season One finale of Lucha Underground, which aired on August 5, 2015, and helped Johnny Mundo defeat Alberto El Patron. She wrestled for the first time in three years at the STARDOM promotion last October, winning a pair of tag team matches.

A new week begins tomorrow, with the continued hype for the Women’s Submission Match at Extreme Rules, plus more drama in the Knockouts Division! Until then!
