Royally Yours: Week in Review

The Royals struggled again this week, only winning two of their six games. They lost their series against the Nationals and Indians and are currently third in the American League Central. The Royals are in a slump but they will play the Yankees and Braves this week. The Yankees and Braves have struggled this season and both teams are currently in last place in their respective divisions. The Royals should be able to get some much-needed wins this week.ChesterCuthbert

The Royals this week lost Mike Moustakas to the 15-day disabled list with a fractured thumb. He will be replaced by one of the Royals top prospects Cheslor Cuthbert. Last season Cuthbert played in the All-Star Futures Game and has valuable postseason experience. He is still developing into a major league hitter but has a .975 fielding percentage in the 13 games he has started as a third baseman with the Royals. There will be a dip in offensive production with Moustakas gone but Cuthbert is a decent replacement at third base.

DrewButeraThe Royals offense is starting to get hot again and the Royals have four players that have a batting average over .330 in the last seven games. Alcides Escobar, Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain and Drew Butera have all helped get the Royals offense back on track. Hosmer still leads the Royals with a batting average of .336, which is the third best batting average in the American League and the best for a first baseman in either league.

The Royals starting pitching has been the biggest issue for the Royals so far this season. Ian Kennedy is the only starting pitcher who has a winning record this year. Chris Young and Kris Medlen both have ERA’s over 5 and have a combined record of 2-6. The Royals pitching will need to improve for the Royals to win. Their starting rotation has a lot of experience and their numbers will likely improve when the Royals offense heats up.

The Royals have had a rough couple of weeks but they will have great matchups this week against the Yankees and Braves. The series with the Braves will be the beginning of a six game home stand for the Royals, which should help the Royals get back on track.
