Women’s Wrestling Wrap-Up

Welcome to the latest edition of the Women’s Wrestling Wrap Up, which takes a look at everything in the past week of women’s wrestling, beginning with Monday’s Raw and ending with Payback last night.

MariaandGailThe final Raw before Payback featured Natalya defeating Emma, but the next night’s Impact Wrestling marked the official beginning of the Maria Kanellis Era, and the newly crowned leader of the Knockouts wasted no time using her power to further taunt Gail Kim–doing to by putting Gail in a match against Rosemary, who abducted Gail the previous week on Impact. As we all expected, Maria got herself involved and cost Gail her match against Rosemary. Seriously, the Gail/Maria grudge match needs to happen. I’m starting to wonder if Maria has a real-life no-contact clause in her contract. I find it very strange that TNA wouldn’t have Maria really get in there and compete, knowing that she’s done so in WWE and other promotions.

Wednesday’s NXT saw Asuka on the program for the first time since Takeover, where she won the NXT Women’s Championship, and defeat Eva Marie in what I consider Eva’s best outing yet. I am a huge supporter and defender of Eva Marie, but I immensely questioned whether or not she could hang with Asuka, and from what I saw, she did very well. It was not a good night for Ivelisse later that evening on Lucha Underground, as she and Son of Havoc had to defend their Trios Championship without Angélico, and they ended up dethroned in the finals of the Trios Tournament. Regarding Thursday’s SmackDown, Charlotte and Natalya faced each other verbally on Dean Ambrose’s talkshow, “Ambrose Asylum.”NatalyaVSCharlotte

So Payback featured the anticipated bout between Charlotte and Natalya, and what happened? WWE decided to party like it’s 1997 (RIP Prince) and have Natalya screwed over in Chicago just like her Hall of Fame uncle Bret Hart, who was in Nattie’s corner, was screwed in Montréal. Something about Harts, screwjobs, and Original Six cities lately. Anyway, the Harts got their payback (no pun intended) when they placed the Flairs in Sharpshooters. This is not over. I expect a rematch at Extreme Rules in 20 days. A recent article stated that Becky Lynch vs Emma was possibly planned for the PPV, but it was nixed. I and other fans are still waiting for that match, ever since their verbal spat began last month.

Allysin-Kay-FaceOn a final note, TNA signed indie sensation Allysin Kay this past week. Allysin Kay is a popular name on the indie circuit, having competed for promotions such as Shine Wrestling, SHIMMER Women Athletes, and Absolute Intense Wrestling, to name a few. She is best known by indie fans as one third of Women Superstars Uncensored’s Midwest Militia, with Sassy Stephie and Jessicka Havok. Kay participated in the tapings of Knockouts Knockdown 4 two weeks ago, and was signed on the spot. She was given the ring name, Sienna.

A new week starts tonight with the fallout from Payback! Until next week!
