The Lucha Lowdown

Welcome to the latest edition of The Lucha Lowdown, which recaps the latest edition of Lucha Underground!

MundoVScageLast night’s episode began with the Steel Cage Match between Johnny Mundo and Cage, which was made last week when Taya informed Mundo of the news. Steel Cage Matches are meant to prevent outside interference, but in this one, Taya managed to get involved constantly, climbing the cage and inserting weapons for Mundo to use, and even climbing into the ring and helping Mundo assault Cage. However, Cage one-upped Taya by handcuffing her, then Mundo accidentally struck Taya with a chair! After the miscue, Cage ended up defeating Mundo, and won one of the seven Gift of the Gods medallions.

ReyAztecaPumaLUNext up was the four way final of the Trios Championship Tournament, and before the match, Dario Cueto stated that Angélico, one of the Trios Champions, was assaulted earlier, and that Ivelisse and Son of Havoc will have to compete on their own. The challenging teams were Rey Mysterio/Prince Puma/Dragon Azteca, Jr, Joey Ryan/Mr. Cisco/Cortez Castro, and Fenix/PJ Black/Jack Evans. It was a frantic match, as expected, with a funny moments between Ryan and Ivelisse, when the latter slapped the former after he came on to her. Once Castro had Ivelisse down, Joey Ryan wanted a tag, but Castro refused. At that moment, Ivelisse rolled up Castro, providing the first elimination. However, the shorthanded champions were eliminated later on when Evans rolled up Ivelisse, after PJ Black helped out. As a result, new champions were crowned, and in the end, Rey Mysterio got the pin on Evans to win the titles for himself, Azteca, and Puma. I love this trio, so I was elated that they ended up winning the belts. I can’t wait to see more of them in action!vampiroPentagon

The show ended with Pentagon Jr being urged by his master, Vampiro, to rise from his wheelchair (a result of his encounter with Matanza. After he is unable to stand properly, Vampiro leaves, referring to his protege as “weak.” I’m a bit disappointed that Mariposa and Kobra Moon, the female stars, have been MIA lately. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Taya, but I need to see more women. I’m still waiting for LU to build a proper women’s division with a title. Hopefully it’ll happen soon.

That is the Lucha Lowdown for this week! Until next week!
