Tomahawks and Touchdowns: Draft Preview

The Chiefs will have an opportunity to build their roster this week with the 2016 NFL Draft. There are a few areas where the Chiefs could add some depth and young talent. The Chiefs will have seven picks in the draft barring any trades.WillFullerNotreDame

There are a few options for the Chiefs with the 28th pick. Who the Chiefs pick in the first round will depend on what the teams ahead of them do. Will Fuller has the potential to fall to the 28th pick and if he is available I think the Chiefs will take a serious look at him. Fuller could add speed to the Chiefs receiving corps. Another player that the Chiefs will seriously consider is Eli Apple. The former Buckeye cornerback could be a perfect fit with the Chiefs. The Chiefs will need to draft a cornerback at some point in the draft to fill the spot vacated by Sean Smith in free agency. Eli Apple is considered the third or fourth best corner in the draft and there is a good chance he will be available for the 28th pick. He needs work but he is a good enough athlete to have a big impact his rookie year.

The Chiefs will have one pick on day two of the draft. The Chiefs were stripped of their third round draft pick due to a violation of the tampering rule when acquiring Jeremy Maclin last year. The Chiefs will need to figure out what their top priorities are when they make their second round pick because they will not get another pick until the 126th pick in the fourth round. There are many positions that the Chiefs could target with their second round pick. Cornerback, offensive tackle and wide receiver are the three position groups I believe they will target. Their second round pick will depend on who they select in the first round because I think they will take one offensive player and one defensive player in the first two rounds.

kevin-hoganOn day three of the draft the Chiefs will have five selections. This is the portion of the draft is where the Chiefs will add depth. The Chiefs will probably select the best athlete on the board. One position they may target in the later rounds is quarterback. During the off-season they lost their reliable veteran backup Chase Daniel to the Eagles. Kevin Hogan, Brandon Allen and Cody Kessler are the three quarterbacks I could see the Chiefs selecting in the later rounds. The Chiefs currently have three quarterbacks on their roster but I think adding a rookie could be good for the backup competition.

The Chiefs roster is already deep and the draft will only strengthen the roster. There are a few needs the Chiefs have but their main priority will be to add depth to the roster. John Dorsey and Andy Reid have had success in their first three drafts with the Kansas City Chiefs and I do not expect 2016 to be any different.
